Lab Report Format

FOLLOW THIS FORMAT. ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS AND YOU WILL GET A GOOD GRADE!
The lab report is designed for you to express what you did and learned during the experiment. It includes what you were going to do,
what you actually did, what you discovered. Your reporting needs to be clear and objective.
Format: Each section of the lab needs to be written in ink. Each section will begin with a centered section header as seen in
this document.
Title
The title page indicates the subject of the report. It is concise (less than 15 words) and includes aspects of the experiment. It should
also include the students name, class period and date.
Introduction and hypothesis
Introduction: Gives the research background of the experiment. It should include:

An explanation of the question or area being investigated. Purpose of the lab.


Include information already known about the question.

Hypothesis: discussion of the question being researched. A hypothesis is based on known research.

Include outcome that is expected and if this supports your hypothesis


Hypothesis includes the words If..Then..because or a null hypothesis is valid.
You may have to do research to come up with a good hypothesis.
Materials and procedures

Materials: Is the list of materials items used in the experiment. Examples include:

How much of something is used concentrations and amounts.


Description of the equipment used including brand names if applicable
If animals or people are involved include: species, age, size, gender.

Procedure: the numbered list of steps, so someone else can follow it exactly. It can also include a sketch of the lab set-up
Results/Data Collection
Give results of experiment in data only. NO opinions or analysis. This section is only numbers and graphs.
Graphing: you may have one or more graphs decide the type of graph. Title the graph, Label the axis with measurement.
REMEMBER: DRY MIX
Discussion/Conclusion
Analysis: reviews the hypothesis and purpose of the experiment.

Interpret your results-clearly explain whether the results support or refute your hypothesis tested.
Evaluate your hypothesis based on the data. Explain these topics:
o Did the data support your hypothesis? Explain the data
o What do the results mean?
o Discuss errors and problems and anomalous (weird stuff) and provide explanations for them and ways to improve
the experiment to avoid errors.
o Propose a new experiment that could be conducted that could further investigate the subject.
Works Cited

This is a place to put all the references you used. Citations should include:

Authors name
Publication information or website
Title of the article or book and page numbers.
