English Language Arts/ Literacy
In order to teach English language arts/literacy I have to know that students learn about
spelling, reading, literature, and composition. This is so students can develop comprehension and
the capacity to use written and oral language. Due to the new Common Core Standards students
are required to read high-quality literature and informative text to become broadly literate. This
text will prepare students for college, careers, and civic life. Students have to read complex text
to learn about historical events and democratic ideals, processes, and institutions. As a teacher I
need to develop a plan for independent reading. Independent reading is a major part of language
arts. Also, I need to know about the three different writing styles they are: argumentive,
informative, and explanatory.
My English 487 class is very helpful, I have learned about phonology. Phonology has
taught me how to distinguish a long vowel to a short vowel. It has also helped me with
graphemes; I can now divide a word by its written symbol of speech. Also, I have learned about
the difference between a homophone and a homograph. In my childrens literature class I learned
what is proper to read to each grade level. In my writing in education class I learned about
grammar. I learned about adjectives, adverbs, nouns, prepositions, pronouns, and articles. In my
field work class I learned about long vowels and short vowels and how to sort them. I also
learned the process of writing an essay that is informative. I believe that all of these classes have
helped review language arts.

As a feature teacher I am prepared to teach students about phonology and grammar. I can
explain to the difference between homophones and homographs. Many students confuse words
because they do not know the difference between words. As a teacher I can teach them that some
words sound the same but are spelled differently and that some words are spell the same but have
a different meaning. I am also prepared to teach about parts of speech. I need help with teaching
ELD students. I think that my English 487 class will help me more with ELD students.
The artifacts that I am sharing in my portfolio are my morphology project and grapheme
and phoneme project. My morphology project will show my knowledge of derivational affixes,
content words, function words, compound words, complex words, and derivational and
inflectional suffixes. My grapheme- phoneme project will show my knowledge of consonants,
long vowels, and short vowels.
