Get in the Groove

Use an icebreaker
Word Association: Helps people explore the breadth of the area
under discussion
Participants call out words related to the word carton

Tell a story
Connect participants to experiences with the milk/juice carton
Ex. Elementary school cafeteria or perusing the grocery store shelves

Clarify Topic
Provide stimulus in the form of pictures and stories

Explain the range of ideas

Traditional: graphic design changes on similar gable carton
Transitional: still uses the gable top, but it has a variation on
structure or an add-on
Transformational: what if the gable top never existed? How
would you process or package milk or juice with paper
substrate?

Generate IdeasBrainwriting
What?
Rapid individual idea generation

Why?
Allows participants quiet time to think about ideas, so the quality of
ideas is better
Reduces the chances of ideas being blocked
Doesnt make the introverted participants feel threatened/uncomfortable

How?
Use blank paper with 3 columns and 4 rows
3 minutes (or 5) to generate 3 ideas each
Pass paper to the right
Participants can then use ideas already generated on the paper as
stimulus; helps to rule out duplicates

Repeat until the sheet is filled

Generate IdeasSCAMPER
Technique
Ask SCAMPER questions about each step of the
challenge or subject and see what new ideas
emerge

Substitute something.
Combine it with something else.
Adapt something to it.
Modify or Magnify it.
Put it to some other use.
Eliminate something.
Reverse or Rearrange it.

Provide technique if participants appear stuck

Generate IdeasGroup Synthesis

What?
Collaborative brainstorming
More detailed, comprehensive ideas

Why?
Given entire sheets of paper to use to flourish favorite ideas
Allowed more time to evaluate the idea and accurately detail it
Participants have had time to compose their own thoughts and will be
stimulated by interaction

How?
Create five teams of four participants each by numbering off participants 1-4
Use blank sheets of paper to express your ideas: draw & write
Generate 3 new ideas (or more) as a group
Choose favorite idea as a team and pick one member to share it with the
brainstorming group

Close Session
Thank everyone for being engaged in
participation
Encourage participants to share any future
ideas they have on the subject with
facilitator via email
Collect all materials
Distribute compensation ($20 Amazon gift
cards)

Facilitation Best Practices

Make members the center of attention
Speak in simple and direct language
Work hard to stay unbiased
Make notes that reflect what participants mean
Listen and otherwise document intently to reflect true meanings
Stay flexible and ready to change direction if necessary
Utilize a range of discussion tools
End on a positive and optimistic note

Organize and Analyze Data

Organize and Analyze Data

Input raw data into Excel spreadsheet
Categorize by traditional, transitional,
transformational
Generate charts from participant
demographics
Cluster common themes

Next Steps
Review all ideas generated
Evergreen to select favorite themes
Hold sessions that delve deeper into
specific topics
