Describe how waste is generated. Identify and propose a solution for a waste issue in the
school setting
I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes):
A. The third grade students will recognize how waste is generated by sorting
through their classroom trash.
B. The third grade students will be able to propose a solution to generate less
trash in their classroom by sorting through the recyclable and unrecyclable
objects.

IV. Implementation
A. Introduction
1. Teacher will ask students what they already know about
recycling.
a. What does it recycling mean?
b. Do they recycle in the classroom? At home?
c. What do they recycle?
d. What happens to the trash when they dont recycle?
2. Teacher will read Charlie and Lola book
3. Teacher will ask students questions about the text.
a. What did Charlie and Lola recycle in the book?
b. Why is it important to recycle?
c. What did they learn about recycling?
B. Development
1. Teacher will show video of what happens to the waste that goes
to a landfill and provide guided note (see attached).
2. Teacher will ask students if theres any way to reduce their
amount of waste.
a. Donate used clothes, shoes, and blankets
b. Recycle paper, plastic, tins
c. Use both sides of the paper (scrap paper)
d. Compost
3. Students will each be given a pile of trash (see attached).
4. Students are to separate their trash into the appropriate
sections on the worksheet (this will be used as formative
assessment).
5. Teacher will walk around room and provide assistance when
necessary.
6. Teacher will review the answers with students.
7. Teacher will place classroom trash and recycling bins in the
front of the room.
8. Teacher will ask if they students think they properly disposed
of their waste.
9. Teacher will lay all trash out on the table.

10. Students (while wearing gloves) will all take turns to throw the
garbage away in the correct bins.
C. Closure
1. Teacher and students will review what waste goes into which
bins.
2. Teacher will write up a list what waste goes in which bin and
post on the wall above the trash/recycling bins.
3. Students will hand in Trash or Recycle papers
4. Students will attach handouts into their science journals
D. Accommodations/Differentiation
1. Guided notes and detailed instudetion will be provided to all
students.
2. To accommodate Johnny, a boy who is completely blind, his
materials will be provided in braille and tactually. A copy of the
Trash Laws will also be posted on the wall in Braille.
E. Assessment/Evaluation Plan
1. Formative
a. Trash or Recycle worksheet
b. Checklist for students who place waste in appropriate
bin.
2. Summative
a. Science journals will be collected at the end of the unit.
