ESSENTIAL UNIT 1 (E01)

(Addition & Subtraction Within 1,000)
(July 2013)

Unit Statement: In this unit, the student will use different strategies to add and subtract
whole numbers and solve word problems and real world problems. The student will apply
the key terms and develop problem solving skills.
Essential Outcomes: (must be assessed for mastery)
Problem solving and higher order thinking components are essential for A level
mastery. Each TSW can contain problem solving and higher order thinking components
(as found in suggested text).
1. The Student Will round 2 and 3 digit numbers to the nearest ten or hundred. (Go
Math 1.2)*
2. TSW demonstrate the use of compatible numbers in rounding and mental math
strategies to estimate sums. (1.3-1.4)
3. TSW distinguish between the commutative and assosicative properties of addition
to add more than two addends. (1.5)
4. TSW demonstrate the break apart strategy and use place value to add. (1.6-1.7)
5. TSW describe compatible numbers and use rounding and mental math strategies to
estimate differences. (1.8-1.9)
6. TSW demonstrate the use of place value and combine place values to subtract.
(1.10-1.11)
7. TSW choose problem solving strategies to solve one and two step word problems. (1.12)
*suggested GoMath! chapter sections to use with TSWs
Introduced and Practiced Outcomes: (taught but not assessed)
1. The Student Will discuss the concepts using the key terms of the unit.
2. TSW engage in critical thinking and problem solving.
3. TSW demonstrate addition and subtraction of whole numbers within 1,000.
4. TSW demonstrate a use of a variety of addition and subtraction strategies.
Key Terms and Concepts:
Associative property of addition
Commutative property of addition
Compatible numbers
Round

Estimate
Identify property of addition

I can explain the strategies I use to

solve several one and two-step word
problems using our new math
vocabulary. I created a real world
math project for this unit.

I can test my strategies by solving one

and two-step word problems.
