The real human tragedy is that people are always persuaded to love their chains.

In India, the caste system, with its belief in karma and reincarnation, teaches that everyone is in
the exact social condition he is supposed to be in because of the the good and bad acts in his
previous life.

In feudal Europe, peasants and nobles were taught by the Catholic Church that the king was
God's divine representative on earth and that rebellion against the king was a sin against God.

Russians were taught that they lived in a communist state where there was equality of condition
and opportunity when, in fact, they lived in an oppressive totalitarian society controlled by a self-
perpetuating elite Nomenklatura.

We Americans are taught that we live in a free society with a free market when, in fact,
corporations control America, the top one percent of the population owns more wealth than the
bottom ninety percent and the elite send their children to boarding schools to prepare them to run
the country.

Every messenger who tries to tell the other side of the story is ignored or silenced if necessary.

Then comes the inevitable explosion, when truth can't contain itself any longer.
