Geometry in the Real

World

Point
the

precise location of something; a

spatially limited location
What better way to represent a point
than a point on a map

Line

Alineis a collection of points along a

straight path that goes on and on in
opposite directions. Alinehas no
endpoints. Alinesegment is a part of
alinehaving two endpoints. A ray is a part
of alinewith one endpoint and goes on
and on in one direction...

The

lines on the road are the perfect

example for lines in the real world
because they go on for miles

Plane

Aplaneis the two-dimensional analogue of a point

(zero dimensions), a line (one dimension) and threedimensional space.Planescan arise as subspaces of
some higher-dimensional space, as with the walls of a
room, or they may enjoy an independent existence in
their own right, as in the setting of
Euclideangeometry.

The checker board represents the plane because its just

that a plane

Segment

A linesegmentis a piece, or part, of a line in geometry. A

linesegmentis represented by end points on each end of
the linesegment. A line ingeometryis represented by a
line with arrows at each end.
The piano has so many segments Id be suspired if no one
else used it

Ray

Arayis a part of a line that has one endpoint

and extends in one direction without ending. A
line segment is a part of a line between two
endpoints.
Do you get it? The tennis ball is at rest and the is
periled forward to form the ray

Collinear Points

Pointsthat lie on the same line are

calledcollinear points. If there is no line on
which all of thepointslie, then they are
noncollinear points. In Figure 3 ,pointsM, A,
and N are collinear, andpointsT, I, and C
arenoncollinear. Figure 3 Threecollinear
pointsand threenoncollinear points.
See how the roads cross, perfect

Acute Angles
The

acute angle is the small angle

which is less than90.
This example is pretty tasty huh

Obtuse Angles
An

Obtuse angle is a large angle that

is larger than 90
This ones kind of given

Right Angles
A

Right angle is an angle that is

equal to 90
This goal is made of right angles

Perpendicular Lines
When

two lines cross to make

multiple right angles
See signs can be helpful

Complementary Angles

In a right angled triangle, the two non-right

angles are complementary, because in a triangle
the three angles add to180, and90has
already been taken by the right angle. If two
angles add to90, we say they "Complement"
each other.
Time to see some complementary angles

Supplementary Angles

Two Angles are Supplementary if they add up

to180 degrees. These two angles
(140and40) are Supplementary Angles,
because they add up to180. Notice that
together they make a straight angle. But the
angles don't have to be together.

Careful supplementary angles can be quite sour

Vertical Angle
Angles

a and c are vertical angles, so

must be equal, which means they
are 140 degrees each
Opposite but equal
These clouds created by jets have
crossed and formed a perfect
example of vertical angles

Acute Triangles
In

an acute triangle, all angles are

less than right angles ( each is less
than 90 degrees.
They may be equilateral, isosceles,
or scalene
This pool triangle is really an acute
triangle

Obtuse Triangle
In

an obtuse triangle, one angle is

greater than a right angle ( it is more
than 90 degrees)
An obtuse triangle may be isosceles
or scalene
This coat hanger is the best example
for obtuse angles in the real world

Right Triangle
A

right triangle is a triangle with a

right angle
This sandwich has been cut to show
a right triangle

Equilateral Triangle
In

geometry, an equilateral triangle

is a triangle in which all three sides
are equal.
All angles equal 60 degrees
This ball is made of multiple
equilateral triangles

Isosceles Triangles
In

geometry, an isosceles triangle is

a triangle that has two sides of equal
length
This flag has an isosceles triangle
right in the middle of it

Scalene Triangle
A

scalene triangle is a triangle that

has three unequal sides
This bikes frame is an scalene
triangle
