Unit
Five Senses Science Unit
Instructional Strategies:
Assessments:
All assessments for this unit will be varied and appropriate. All lessons will
begin with a pre-assessment. A pre-assessment is given to provide the teacher with
more information on how to plan for future lessons. Formative assessments will
include things such as class discussion, questions for each read aloud, and various
sheets that go along with the unit. Formative assessments really help the teacher to
understand the students thinking and it provides the teacher with more information
on how to further assist the student. At the end of the unit, the students will have a
summative assessment where they have to add the body part that they do with
each sense. It will say what do I use to.. and then at the bottom it will have the
body parts and they have to put the sense in the blank beside it. Other assessments
will be included within the unit.
Accommodations/Adaptations:
Most of the accommodations will include extended time for the students to
finish tasks. I will also make accommodations for the students that are having a
hard time concentrating by giving that student a certain job to help me with during
the lessons for the unit. I will have something for the early finishers to complete.
1. Day One: Introducing the Five Senses and distinct structures in the human
body (Monday)
Lesson Objective: Students will label an anchor chart that I created with the
different senses. The senses will have Velcro on the back and the chart will have an
arrow pointing to the specific part of the body that is used with the sense and I will
call on students to come up and place the sense in the spot that it goes in. I will also
be asking the students questions about what body parts are used to see, hear,
smell, taste, and touch.
Standard K-3: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the distinct
structures of the human body and the different functions they serve.
*Use the big book My Five Senses by Aliki for shared reading every day and I will
refer back to this book during the other days of week one for the five senses.
2. Day One: All about Seeing (Monday)
Lesson Objective: Students will distinguish which body part is used to see. (Read
aloud will be included with this lesson).
Standard K-3: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the distinct
structures of the human body and the different functions they serve.
Indicator K-3.2: Identify the functions of the sensory organs (including the eyes,
nose, ears, tongue, and skin).
3. Day Two: All about Hearing (Tuesday)
Lesson Objective: Students will distinguish what body part is used to hear sounds.
(Read aloud will be included with this lesson).
Standard K-3: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the distinct
structures of the human body and the different functions they serve.
Indicator K-3.2: Identify the functions of the sensory organs (including the eyes,
nose, ears, tongue, and skin).
4. Day Three: All about Smelling (Wednesday)
Lesson Objective: Students will distinguish what body part is used to smell things
around them.
5. Day Four: All about Tasting (Thursday)

structures of the human body and the different functions they serve.
Indicator K-3.2: Identify the functions of the sensory organs (including the eyes,
nose, ears, tongue, and skin).
6. Day Five: All about Touching (Friday)
Lesson Objective: Students will distinguish what body part is used to touch things.
**Week Two**
Lesson Objective: Students will be engaged in two different activities that deal
with Sight.
Standard K-3: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the distinct
structures of the human body and the different functions they serve.
Indicator K-3.2: Identify the functions of the sensory organs (including the eyes,
nose, ears, tongue, and skin).

8. Day Seven: Activities using Hearing (Tuesday)
Lesson Objective: Students will be engaged in three different activities that deal
with Hearing.

____________. (With Mrs. Sargent during math time)
Read, Write, Build, and Draw worksheet
Developmental/Age Appropriate:
This unit is developmental appropriate for this group of learners because this
is a science standard that they have to master in Kindergarten. This unit is age
appropriate for this group of learners because all of the activities are things they
can do by themselves, in a small group, or whole group. These activities will be
altered if needed to make accommodations for any child. Some of the activities will
be challenging but most of the students but I know with hard work they can all
complete them.
