Prompt the client to provide more speech

on a topic already presented. These are
either closed ended (i.e., yes-no questions)
or open-ended questions (e.g., tell me
more about your feelings about choosing
accounting as a career)

A response that indicates a check on

communications is being conducted. There
are two types of check responses. These
include (a) clarificationchecking the facts
or meaning of the clients statement (e.g.,
if I understand you correctly, is it correct
to say that choosing social work as a career
is a way to give your life meaning?) and
(b) paraphrasesummarizing your
understanding of the clients statement
(e.g., so, its clear that you feel your choice
of a major was perhaps a mistake).

A response that directs the conversation

from one topic to another (e.g., lets
changes topics and talk about how SDSU
can better support your needs as a
student).
At the end of the session, provide the client
a summary of what was covered during the
session.

In the opening, good job of discussing limits to confidentiality, how the video will be
used, and who will have access to it.

Feedback

The opening question first of all, how was your weekend? was perhaps not the
most effective way to begin the session. Instead ask what brings you here today?
or how can I help you?
Your check responses and focused responses were good for the most part. One thing
to pay attention to with the focused responses is you have a tendency to ask more
than one question at a time. To the extent possible, try to stick with one question at
a time.
I noticed that you took notes during the session. Be sure to ask permission to take
notes (and let the student know why its necessary) ahead of time.
Rather than give the student advice on how to market the event (Post it on

Facebook.) consider using questioning to get her to reflect and come up with ideas
on her own.
The switch response, how do you feel about the board? was a good switch
response and an effective way to engage a new topic of discussion.
Continue responses (both verbal and nonverbal) were good for the most part.
Your nonverbal communication was effective throughout. Eye contact, use of hands
to facilitate speech, posture, heading noddingall were used effectively. One thing
to be mindful of, however, is playing with your ink pen. It could be distracting if you
arent careful.
Nice job of summarizing the session and concluding effectively.
POINTS: 25/25

You have an open and friendly demeanor throughout the session and the student
clearly feels at ease. However, I would have liked to see a little more eye contact
(especially in the beginning) and a little less focus on your notes. It seemed like they
were distracting you a little during the session. You did a fantastic job with continue
responses and focus responses. You were clearly present and your focus questions
were mostly open-ended and encouraged the student to open up. You also showed
empathy and understanding when you were agreeing with and validating her
comments about her decisions she was taking on the advisory board, as well as when
she was talking about her experience with the Monarch students. I think you may
have gotten slightly off track around minute 6 in video 2 and seemed like you were
getting wordy, but this also speaks to the great rapport you had with student. I didnt
hear many check responses throughout, although you did get some in there. Your
summary was excellent and thorough. Well done!!
