    Smartphonescouldbeusedasearlywarningsystemsforlargeearthquakes,accordingtoanewstudy.
    TheGPSsensorsalreadybuiltintosmartphoneswoulddetectthequakesandgiveseveralsecondsofwarning
    forpeoplelivinginareasyettobehit.
    Thephonescanonlydetectreallybigearthquakes,amagnitude7.0orlarger,accordingtothestudypublished
    inthejournalScienceAdvances.

    This"crowdsourcing"techniquecouldbeespeciallyusefulinpartsoftheworldsusceptibletoquakes,where
    morecostlywarningsystemsaren'tavailable,thestudysaid.
    Usingcrowdsourcedobservationsfromusers'smartphones,earthquakescouldbedetectedandanalyzed,andthencustomizedquakewarningscouldbe
    transmittedbacktousers.
    Thesystemhasyettobetestedintherealworld,butapilotprojectisslatedforlaterthisyearinChile,accordingtoLiveScience.
    "Crowdsourceddataarelessprecise,butforlargerearthquakesthatcauselargeshiftsinthegroundsurface,theycontainenoughinformationtodetect
    thatanearthquakehasoccurred,informationnecessaryforearlywarning,"saidstudycoauthorSusanOwenofNASA'sJetPropulsionLaboratory.
    Evenafewsecondswarningcanmakeadifferenceforthesebigquakes,whicharerarebutcancausecolossaldamage.
    Onlyabout15earthquakesayearintheworld(outof1.3milliontotal)aremagnitude7.0orhigher,accordingtotheU.S.GeologicalSurvey.For
    example,thedevastatingearthquakeandresultingtsunamithathitpartsofJapanin2011,killingthousandsofpeople,wasmagnitude9.0.
    "TheU.S.earthquakeearlywarningsystemisbeingbuiltonourhighqualityscientificearthquakenetworks,butcrowdsourcedapproachescanaugment
    oursystemandhaverealpotentialtomakewarningspossibleinplacesthatdon'thavehighqualitynetworks,"DouglasGivenoftheUSGSsaidina
    statement.
    ThestudywasconductedbyscientistsattheUSGS,NASA,CalTech,theUniversityofHoustonandCarnegieMellonUniversity.
