THE ASSEMBLY
The Assembly was made up
of all citizens of Athens (at
least 18 yrs. old, male,
completed military service).
The Assembly had 4 main
duties: issue decrees
(official orders, such as
going to war), elect officials,
make the laws, & preside
over the courts.
The Assembly needed at
least 6,000 citizens to hold a
vote.

6,000 potential jurors were selected by lottery
every year from citizens over 30 years of age.
Each individual case could be heard by a jury of
anywhere from 200-2,000 members.
Trials lasted no longer than 1 day.
Verdicts were decided right away with no time
to deliberate or argue.
