Civil Engineering

BriefSum m ary ofCivil

Engineering.
Courses may include the completion of a design project, in

which students assess structural integrity of materials.

Most programs generally require students to complete
laboratory courses in which they analyze substances ranging
from soil to concrete. These courses help students identify
basic properties of materials, as well as potential problems
from using them
Those pursuing an engineering degree frequently need financial
assistance to pay for school. Because engineering studies are
often time consuming, scholarships that can help students pay
for additional semesters are of particular importance since
working while in school is not an option.
Fortunately, (A little good news: Engineering is usually one of
the highest paid college majors.)With that being said, any loans
borrowed I would be able to pay back without a problem.

Learn the value of networking. When it comes to being a leader, whom

you know is almost as important as what you know

Work in teams as much as you can. Whether it's creating a solarpowered car, participating in a sport, or writing for the school paper,
get involved with an organization that requires a team effort to
produce great results

Find your flawsand fix them. As with any skill, leadership needs
constant improvement. When you are part of a team, try to create a
way to get feedback from team members, group leaders, and
professors.

Take a business class. As an engineer, it's not enough for you to be

technically proficient; you need to have business savvy.

Make your summers productive. Employers place tremendous value on

practical experience. Seek out internship opportunities actively and
early in your academic career.

Recruit and develop your personal board of directors. As an

undergraduate, you might feel alone when confronted with hard
decisions about the courses to take, jobs to apply for, or even
balancing school work and your personal life.

Minimum requirement:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited program

Civil engineers begin their college careers by:

enrolling in chemistry
physics
advanced mathematics courses

computer design classes as part of the core

engineering statistics ( to develop their computational skills.)

Pre-major courses may also cover fundamental engineering

principles and concepts. After completing core course requirements
civil engineering students get placed into advanced topics:

thermodynamics

structural analysis.

H ow m any years ofcollege w illyou need?

4 years of university-level studies to

become a civil engineer. (Some

students participate in internships or
co-op programs that involve working
for a civil engineering company in
between semesters of classes.)
These students may take 5 or 6
years.

Are there scholarships and loans available for

Yes there are scholarships and loans available for engineering.

pursuing undergraduate or graduate programs in math,
engineering, technology, and science.

The National Science Foundation offers scholarships in

mathematics, science, engineering, and technology, to students
who demonstrate financial need and intend on pursuing a career
in related areas
The Ralph K. Hillquist Honorary SAE Scholarship is offered to

Engineers plan, and they get

things done. They create
machinery to get those things
done more efficiently. They

Im pact on Fam ily Life

Pros
Engineers make their own schedules
Engineers only have to work up to 40 hours a week
When you are able to spend time with your family theyre able to do whatever without

having finacial problems.

Cons
Little time to spend with family because the work hours depend on how quickly you can

get the job done.

Some projects take weeks maybe months to complete
Engineers also take time out at home to complete projects.
A 40-hour workweek is typical for civil engineers, though longer hours may occur when

deadlines must be met.

Advice to The Youngins

I havent entered into this career yet, nor have I even
gotten enrolled into college to major in civil engineering. I
do know that this is one of my goals in life that I really want
to achieve. I'm doing it just because it is the highest paid
college major. Im doing it because I think that this is
something I would enjoy doing while also making lots of
money. I talked to someone who was an engineer and of
course they told me that the job come with pros and
cons. However,I accepted that because I know that
everything cannot be perfect and somethings in life come
with ups and downs.I think that if this is something that a
person really want to do then that person would try their
hardest to overcome whichever obstacles they run
into. They should think about it and consider this as a career
and stick to it.
