Rationale for Teaching Social Studies Reflection

Much like my Educational Philosophy, I still agree with everything in my rationale that I
wrote a couple of years ago. It upsets me that social studies, particularly history, gets overlooked
in todays educational reforms. The subject is not one of the tested disciplines, showing to me
that policy makers dont see it as important enough, and there is fear that the Common Core is
pushing history towards becoming a glorified English class. In fact, the only recent attempt I
have seen to revamp social studies is the new C3 frameworks. I feel as though the knowledge
and skills learned in the social studies disciplines can be carried over into any other walk of life.
Therefore, instead of social studies being pushed aside it should be embraced as a core
discipline. I feel as though it is the discipline that relates most to human life since that is
essentially what it is the study of. It is my mission in the coming years as a teacher to get
students interested in social studies and to show them the significant impact it has on the world
around us.
