MODEL SCHOOL-BASED POLICY OF MIDDLE SCHOOL 180 FOR USE OF CELL PHONES, TECHNOLOGICAL

DEVICES, AND PORTABLE MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEMS ON SCHOOL PROPERTY


Students are permitted to bring the following electronic items to school: 1) cell phones; 2) laptops, tablets, iPads and other
similar technological devices, however, it is understood that the school is not responsible for lost or stolen devices
at any time.
The use of cell phones or technological devices at school is subject to the conditions below.

B.

Cell phones may not be turned on or used during the administration of any school quiz, test or examination.
They may not be turned on in any instructional classes and must not be visible. They may be kept in the book
bag, etc. and may not be worn on their belt, or in full view of anyone.

2.

Technological devices may not be turned on or used during the administration of any school quiz, test or
examination, except where such use has been explicitly authorized by the school or is contained in an
Individualized Education Program or Section 504 Accommodation Plan.

3.

Cell phones and technological devices, may not be turned on or used during school fire drills or other
emergency preparedness exercises.

4.

Cell phones and technological devices may not be used in locker rooms or bathrooms.

5.

Students who use cell phones or technological devices, in violation of any provision of the DOEs Discipline
Code, the schools policy, Chancellors regulation A-413, and/or the DOEs Internet Acceptable Use and Safety
Policy (IAUSP) will be subject to discipline in accordance with the guidance interventions and disciplinary
responses set forth in the Discipline Code.

Cell phones may be used as set forth below


During the school day:

Cell phones may not be turned on or used while on school property. If a phone must be used permission must
be granted by a school official.

Cell phones may not be turned on or used during instructional time.

Cell phones may be used outside the building before school begins and outside the building after school ends
unless permission is granted by a school official.

During after-school, school-sponsored programs or activities:


Cell phones may be used outside the building before a school sponsored program begins or if permission is
granted by a school official.
F. Confiscation and return of electronic items
Describe the circumstances under which electronic items may be confiscated and returned. In determining whether
to confiscate an electronic device, schools should consider the nature of the violation. Where appropriate,
measures should be instituted in a progressive fashion. Such measures may include, but are not limited to:

warnings

confiscation of item and return at end of school day

confiscation of item and return following parent conference

revocation of privilege to bring item to school.
