3 SKAETBOARDING PROGRAM EVALUTION

Executive Summary
This report provides an evaluation and analysis of the youth skateboard program at Provo
Parks and Rec. This program has been very successful in the past years and has a repeat rate of
40%. This repeat rate is the highest from all the programs at Provo Rec Center. The program has
had only one instructor, David L. Due to the success that this instructor has had, David has been
considered to be the instructor over the program each year since 2013. We have focused this
evaluation report on why the program is very successful.
The instruments used in our evaluation include an electronic survey that was distributed
after the programs session had ended. The survey was created on Qualtrics, and is composed of
both quantitative and qualitative data. All calculations and data can be found in the reports
Appendix.
Results of the data analyzed show that David, the instructor, plays the biggest role in the
success of the program. There are only positive results about how he conducts the class with
individualized attention for each kid, and patience at all times. However, the data analyzed also
shows that David was not the only key to the success of the program. The kids themselves make
the program successful because they have a strong desire to learn and develop skateboarding and
social skills. This report finds ways for the Parks and Recreation Center to maintain and/or
improve their success in the future. The recommendations discussed include the following:

Chapter 1 Introduction
What
The Provo Recreation Center has been offering a skateboarding class since 2013. There
are two different levels of classes offered, an introductory and an intermediate class. There are
eight classes in the programs with no more than six students per class. Each class is eight sessions
long and they last for an hour and a half. The kids skateboarding class has been very successful
and has a repeat rate of 40%. All the classes are always filled; however a waitlist is provided so
that more kids have the opportunity to take this class if someone drops it. There are always a lot
of people on the waitlist. At the end of the program, an End of Season Party is held at the Rec
Center where parents and students from all the sessions come to celebrate the end of the
skateboarding season. The purpose of this party is to have all the students from all of the sessions
to skate together, show off to their parents what they have learned, and to have the parents meet
the instructor. The class has had the same instructor, David L. since 2013, and he might be
coming back this summer to teach the program again. Even though the program has been very
successful during the past two years, it has not been evaluated yet. Furthermore, if it is not
evaluated, the Provo Rec Center and new instructors will not know why the class was so
successful, and they will not be able to continue their success.

Why
The youth skateboard program at Provo Parks and Rec has certainly been impactful in the
community. There are youth, in whatever city you go to, who enjoy participating in skating-based
activities. Since the Provo Recreation Center opened in May of 2012, it was made clear to the
local officials that creating a skate bowl and section would be a huge hit amongst the locals. Ever

6 SKAETBOARDING PROGRAM EVALUTION

since the skateboard program started two years ago, parents have commented on how great David
is as an instructor and how well he works with the kids. Due to the success that David has had, he
has been considered to be the instructor over the program each year. The Provo Recreation Center
plans to offer the program again this summer, but in the case that David does not come back as
the instructor, the Provo Recreation center is in search for a future skateboard instructor for the
program. Therefore, the purpose of our evaluation is to provide clear feedback to the Provo
Recreation Center about key characteristics of a great skate instructor, as well as, what aspects of
the class are important to the parents of the youth. We want to find ways for the skate program to
improve. With the feedback, we hope that the skate program at the Provo Recreation Center will
continue its newfound success and will provide the community of Provo with a service that can
be fun and beneficial.

Scope
Since the purpose of our evaluation is to gain feedback about what parents look for in an
ideal skateboarding program instructor, what parts of the program are relevant and important to
what the parents expect out of their children, and what ways the overall program can
continuously improve, we will be conducting an electronic survey that will be distributed after the
programs session has ended. Parents emails from the previous classes are filed, so we will take
those emails and send out an electronic survey link. The electronic survey will convey questions
such as what did you like and not like about the instructor, what were your favorite aspects of the
skateboard program, and what would you change about this program, which will give great
insight into how the program is doing. The development of the survey will commence from
March 2, 2015 and will be completed by March 7, 2015. The survey link will be emailed out to
the parents on Monday, March 9, 2015, and we expect to have all of our responses to the surveys
by Monday, March 23, 2015. By sending an online survey link, this will give an opportunity for

7 SKAETBOARDING PROGRAM EVALUTION

parents and their children to evaluate their overall experience with the program and provide
useful feedback that can be used in the programs continuance in years to come. From that point
on, we will analyze the data and create recommendations that can be used in the years to come.
Our overall goal for this evaluation is to align the expectations of local families with that of the
services that the Provo Recreation Centers skate program has to offer.

8 SKAETBOARDING PROGRAM EVALUTION

Chapter 2: Methods
Sample
Our intention is to gather information from all the participants parents that have taken
the class in the previous two years. We know that getting 100 percent participation from the
parents will be hard, so ideally getting at least an 80 percent response rate is our goal. We believe
that with a sample size of 80 percent, suggestions will show us what was liked and disliked about
the class. Since we have a goal of getting 80 percent and if we do not achieve this, we will write
another email to send out because we believe that it is important to achieve our 80 percent in
order to have a sample that will correlate with the populations suggestions. This means that our
sample size will have 39 out of the 48 parents and kids giving us feedback to ultimately decide
what we should look for in finding a new instructor for the class, in the case that the current
instructor does not return; along with this information, we are looking to see what has made this
program a success for the Provo City Recreation Department. Then according to the feedback that
is received, we feel that we can correctly justify what does and does not work for the
skateboarding class.

Instruments
The instrument we will use to conduct our research is a mixture between a quantitative
and qualitative electronic survey. Some of the advantages of using an electronic survey are that
they are most commonly used - which will not require too much explanation to the participants, it
allows for discovery of quantitative and qualitative relationships - which we can compare once all
the surveys are completed, and it will give us the perspectives of the participants - which is a bulk
of what we would like to know. One of the disadvantages we see with this survey is that the

9 SKAETBOARDING PROGRAM EVALUTION

information collected is strongly dependent upon the quality of the survey and so if our survey is
not carefully crafted to obtain the responses that we need, then we will not receive the
information we are looking for in regards to improving the skate program. Another disadvantage
that we face with our survey is the possibility of misinterpretations of the participants responses.
In order for us to trust our collected data, we will need to make sure that our survey items
are reliable - well-written, have clear directions, and are appropriate to our demographic, valid the questions are subjective and we will have examples to clarify what the question is asking
exactly, and usable - it is easily administered, its distributed over a reasonable amount of time,
and its triangulated so that when all the data is collected, we will see where there are common
trends and responses. We will make sure it is an overall well written and valid survey by having
each group member read through the questions as if we are a participant. We will be using a
combination of ranking, self-assessment, partially close-ended questions, a likert scale, and free
response in order to collect the data we need. The format of the survey will be asked in stages,
just so their first instinct would be to complete the entire survey rather than be overwhelmed with
question and decide not to take it.

Collection Strategy
Electronic Survey via email
Using the emails we have on file of the parents for the kids who participated in the class, we
will send out an email containing an electronic survey. This will give parents and kids an
opportunity to express their thoughts about the class. Whether the class met their expectations or
how it didnt meet their expectations and in what ways the instructor was a great teacher and
ways the teacher could improve. Since the class is fairly small it should not be hard to get
feedback from 80-100 percent of participants. As a result of the small class size, creating a more

10 SKAETBOARDING PROGRAM EVALUTION

intimate setting for participants, instructor and parents to build trust and friendships, we hope that
the parents will feel more prone to fill out the survey.

Incentivize
We would need to discuss what is a good incentive that could be given to parents and/or kids
for completing the survey. Incentives for completing the survey will increase the response rate.
Once the emails have been sent out, we will check a week later to see how many have responded.
If the number is lower than what we wanted as a response rate, we will send out another email as
a last chance to get a reward for answering. A reasonable incentive would be to offer a 10 percent
discount for the upcoming skateboarding class or another Provo Program of their choice. A
survey receipt can be given at the end of the survey, this way their identity is kept anonyms and
they are able to confirm that they did complete the survey and in its entirety.

Thank yous
A thank you email should be sent out to the parents after they have completed the survey. So
that they know that regardless or the negative or positive feedback they know that they are
helping to improve a city program to be more meaningful in the coming summer season.

Analysis Strategy
Because we are using electronic surveys sent via email as our instruments, we will use
Qualtrics to create the survey. Qualtrics has a unique way of showing results from surveys that is
very convenient and easy to use. We know the total number of parents that signed their kids for
the class. We will use a 100 percent of participants for our sample size (population) because we
expect 80 percent of them to respond. We have nine questions that we believe will give us enough
information to analyze the success of the skateboarding class. Our questions will provide
qualitative and quantitative data. We will analyze what makes a difference for the class by coding
the answers. For instance, we can count how many positives and negative comments were given

11 SKAETBOARDING PROGRAM EVALUTION

to the instructor. We can also count the number of parents that say that their favorite aspect was
the skills their kids learned and the number of parents that say that their favorite aspect was the
teacher. Gathering all the qualitative data will allow us to look for themes or a unique attribute to
the class that no one would have expected.

Survey Questions
Summative: What was your favorite aspect of this class?
This question indicates whether it was the skills they learned or if it was the teacher that
played the major role in making the class so great.
Summative: What would you do to change this program?
This indicates to us where the class can improve.
Summative: Why did you sign up your child for this program?
This will indicate to us the thought process of the parents to give us more insight. Maybe
theyve heard about how good of an instructor David is which will indicate how well David
teaches the class.
Summative: What did you like and not like about the instructor?
This indicates what things to change or inform our new instructors of ways to instruct the
class.
Summative: Is this the first time taking the program? If your child is a repeat participant, why
are they back?
Has the child participated in this program before, and if so, is there a specific reason why
they are returning for another year.
Summative: What did your child enjoy most about the class?
We want to know what were some enjoyable moments in the class so that we know what to
focus on for the next year.
Summative: Did your child have a previous interest in skateboarding?
We want to know if the child should any interest in the activity overall or if they were coming
into this with no experience or thought.
Summative: How did you hear about the program?
This question is meant to ask if the parent heard about the program from an online source,
the actual recreation center, a friend or family member, or from a third party source.
Summative: On a scale of 1-10 how likely are you inclined to have your child participate in
the program again?
This question is meant to ask if the parent liked the results from the program for their kid this
year and if they want to put their kid back into the program next year.

12 SKAETBOARDING PROGRAM EVALUTION

Chapter 3: Findings
Our research question is in regards to the Provo Recreation Centers youth skateboard
program, in which we ask, Why is the skateboard program so successful? The reasoning behind
our initial interest is simply because the skateboard program does not have any form of evaluation
for the program in general and so we wanted to know what were the reasons for its success over
the past few years it has been up and running. In this report, there is a collection of descriptive
quantitative and qualitative findings based off our main research questions as mentioned above.
With these findings, we hope to answer our main research question, as well as, figure out how the
Parks and Recreation Center can find ways to maintain and/or improve their success in the future.

Quantitative Findings
Date of Program: July 2014
1.) Are you a Provo resident?
In regards to our demographic, we wanted to find out where the skateboard program
participants were coming from. With the responses received from this question, we are able
to analyze if the Provo Rec Centers skateboard program is favored only amongst families in
Provo, or if it is a more broaden spectrum, including cities like Eagle Mountain and Pleasant
Grove. In conclusion to the data we collected, we were informed that even though there is a
good majority of the part families who are participating in this program are Provo residents,
there is still a notable demographic outside of Provo who like this program as well.

2.) Do you have a Provo Recreation Center Membership?

Another question that we wanted to narrow down was whether or not the participants of
the skateboard program were Provo Recreation Center members or not. This type of
question narrowed down out demographic more, which surprised us because it showed that a
little less than half were non-members. This data is important shows because is shows that
even though theres still a majority of the participants whose families have memberships,
there is still a good chunk of them who only participate in the program.

3.) How did you find out about this program?

In regards to finding out how participants found out about the program, we received a
wide spectrum of responses. The highest over all other result was by friends, possibly family
as well, followed by the recreation centers Activity Guide and then other. What we have
discovered in the other category is that folks could have found out about the program just by
driving by the recreation center and seeing the program in action or possible recommendation
from another after school program.

15 SKAETBOARDING PROGRAM EVALUTION

4.) Is this your first time taking this [skateboard] program?

Knowing whether or not this was a participants first time with a program is definitely an
important response to receive because it lets us know if this program was a repeat for them or
not. As you can see in the figure, a good majority of the participants claimed that this was
their first time taking the program, which we can conclude that word about the programs is
spreading. Since this program has occurred before, it would be interesting to find out why
past participants did not participate in the program again.

5.) Have you been to/taken any other programs?

Finding out if participants have had or are having any other experiences with the
programs provided from the Provo Recreation Center is an important factor to consider. If
they are participating in other programs within the facility, this could be beneficial to how the
program is advertised, as well as reciprocated, to the local community. As one can see by the

responses we had received, a good majority of the participants had or are taking part in other
programs offered.

6.) Rate the instructor overall.

On a scale of 1-10, we asked that the participants and their parents rate the instructor
overall, with 1 meaning they hated him and a 10 meaning they absolutely loved him. Out of
all of the usable responses we received, there was a 100% of the participants who said that
they absolutely loved the instructor. This data will have strong use in regards to a few of our
recommendations to the skateboard programs coordinators, as well as, the instructor David.

17 SKAETBOARDING PROGRAM EVALUTION

7.) How well Did the instructor help the participant develop
technique, skills, and abilities?
On a scale of 1-10, with 1 meaning not at all and 10 meaning absolutely achieved, we
asked the participants how well the instructor did in helping them develop technique, skills,
and abilities. The results we received were, yet again, 100% in absolutely achieved. It seems
that Davids attention to the kids and their needs were greatly identifiable and the
participants responded really well to his instruction. This data will also be used towards a
few of our recommendations later on in the report.

8.) Did the instructor provide enough individualized instruction?

When asked On a scale of 1-10, did the instructor provide enough individual
instruction in regards the participant, and our results showed that 5% of the population of
5% rated a 7 and 95% rated a 10. This result shows that even though a majority of the class
received a good enough amount of individualized instruction, there were still a few
participants who felt that they received almost enough. When reading this question, it is
possible that parents may seem individualized instruction in different ways or the actual
participants were young enough that they probably did not even noticed. These are a few
reason why this result ended up the way it did.

9.) Has the instructor instilled good values such as safety, respect,
skate park etiquette, perseverance, and positive attitude?
An important response that we wanted to know was whether or not the instructor had
instilled good values such as safety, respect, skate park etiquette, perseverance, and a positive
attitude throughout the skateboard program, in which 100% of the survey participants said
yes. David, the instructor, had made such a positive impact with the participants, that the
qualitative, free response questions had nothing but positive feedback specifically about him.
This positive response also assists us with our overall main question, What makes the
program so successful?

19 SKAETBOARDING PROGRAM EVALUTION

10.) Did your child have a previous interest in this program?

In this response, we wanted to see where the skateboard program participant was in
regards to interest about the program, as oppose to their parent(s) just signing them up for a
program. Our results show that a good majority of the skateboarding participants having
interest before hand, however there was still a noticeable difference amongst those who did
not have previous interest. We also wanted to see if there would be a significant interest in
the program so that we would know if would be reasonable to have it happen more often or
in more than one city.

11.) How likely are you to sign up for the skateboarding program this
summer?

20 SKAETBOARDING PROGRAM EVALUTION

This question was for foreshadowing purposes because we wanted to see the likeliness
of participants signing up for the skateboarding program, again, this summer. On a scale of 1
to 10, 1 meaning not likely at all and 10 meaning very likely, we had 17 out of 19 participant
rate 10 and 2 out of 19 participants rate a 9. Even though this would be the majority of
participants saying they would likely take part in the program again, it would be interesting
to find out why the 2 out of the 19 would rate a 9 instead of a 10 like everyone else.

Figure 8 Sign-up

12.) Opinion of cost

An interest response that we came across was that of the participants opinions of cost.
We asked that they rate the cost on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 means completely
unreasonable and 10 means fairly reasonable. It seems that 14 out of the 19 survey
participants thought that the price was more than fair, however we had a few participants who
rated a 5 through a 9. With the majority in agreeing on the price of the program, we can
conclude that it is reasonable. Based off of the responses, the mean for this question was 9.21
with a standard deviation of 1.55.

Qualitative Findings
1.) Please leave a comment about the instructor.
When the parents were asked about the likes and dislikes about the teacher, we found that
Davey was an extremely likable teacher. We linked the code likability to what the responses. For
some of the free responses, we had a parent say, "David was great with kids of varying ability and
made them excited to learn more." Along with this code, parents seemed to like how patient he
was while teaching the class. We had four responses that included patience, one of which was,
"He was so patient with my sons. He made the class so fun and he instilled confidence in my
nervous 7 year old." The last code here that had a large stat was encouragement. Davey made the
parent enjoy the class by the way he taught, and the parents really liked how he encouraged the
kids for the class.

Figure 10 Likes and Dislikes

22 SKAETBOARDING PROGRAM EVALUTION

2.) Child Question: What was your favorite aspect about the program?
The feedback for the class that was really liked was how the kids learned to skateboard while
they were in the class. In a text response that we asked what was the favorite aspect we found that
while the instructor was one of the favorite parts of the class. We found that learning was had the
highest response rate. Parents wrote, "My son learned so much and loved it," along with,
"Learning new tricks and confidence." Another aspect that was really like was the instructor, with
parents saying, "Coach Davey, He was so kind and fun. My boys just adore him." We knew that
Davey was the main reason that parents enjoyed the class, but the combination of Davey and
learning is what really enhanced the class for the parents.

3.) If you are a repeat to this program, why did you decide to retake it?

We asked the parent is our evaluation of the class what would attribute to them having their
kids retake the skateboarding class. We found the number one factor of parents wanting their kids
to skate was because of the improvement. One of the responses from the parents was, "It was so
fun and my son improved so much, would love to do it again this year." The second highest
response rate was because it was enjoyable and the learning in the class, which goes hand in hand
with improvement. Although in the rest of the questions, we found that David was the main
reason for the class, the reason that they would most likely retake the class was due to improving
skating skills.

Figure 12 Retaking the Class

24 SKAETBOARDING PROGRAM EVALUTION

4.) What did the participant take part in the program?

From the response we gathered several response and found 5 codes for why kids took the
class. The largest portion belongs to learning the trait, as well as trying something new. With
these responses we had parents that responded, "Child wanted to try. My son wanted to learn to
skateboard, and this seemed like a safe environment to do so."

Figure 13 Codes for Skateboard Class

5.) What would you do to improve this program?

The last qualitative question we had was, What would you do to improve this program?
From the gathered responses, which were very random, we were able to group the responses into
four categories being: Occurrence, No Change, Assessments, and Assistance. As you can see
people were generally happy with the class and responded, "Nothing." when they were asked
about improving the program. The other code that gathered five responses was about the
occurrence of the class. These people responded that they wished there were, "more times"
available to them.

Chapter 4:
Recommendations
This evaluation for the Provo Recreation Center was created to determine why youth
skateboard program has seen so much success with the few years it has been running. From
opinions and impressions shared to us before conducting the survey, we figured that the programs

26 SKAETBOARDING PROGRAM EVALUTION

success was originally based off of the programs instructor, David, and for the reputation of it
being another Rec. Center program. After conducting the survey, we had come to a few
conclusions, which will be represented, in the first portion of this report. Our second portion will
suggest a few recommendations that the Rec. Center should consider in order for the skateboard
program to continue its success. The results from our findings will be used to provide facts and
figures for our conclusions and recommendations. The last portion of this report will consist with
explanations of several limitations that were encountered while conducting the survey .

Conclusions to Survey
Pricing
Overall, the parents have considered that what they paid for, in regards to the
skateboarding program, is fair considering that their kids are happy with the class. We asked
the parents to rate the class on a 1 to 10 scale, with 1 being unreasonable and 10 being
reasonable. Out of the responses we found that fourteen of the parent ranked price as a 10,
showing that the class was a reasonable price for them, and they felt that it was worth the
money. The lowest response that we got was a 5, and from this we can conclude that even
price rating from this parent was not completely dissatisfied with the price. We can conclude
that the parents expectations are being met for the price of the skateboarding program, and
that they felt that the class was worth the price.

Instructor
We found that the instructor, David, is making the program successful because of the way
he teaches the kids, complementary to his teaching style; the participants enjoy learning new
skills from the instructor. For many of the parent when we asked in the survey, they had
nothing but good things to say about David as an instructor. One parent responded that,
Coach Davie is the best thing that has happened to the Provo Rec Center skating program.

27 SKAETBOARDING PROGRAM EVALUTION

As long as he's there I'll enroll my kids in the skate program every summer because he's the
best! Along with the survey we also had feedback from three of the respondents saying that
David was very encouraging to the kids, as very patient when it came to teaching the new
skills. Furthermore, the dynamics of a patient instructor and eager to learn students make the
skateboarding program at the Provo Recreation Center and incredible success.

Skills
It was also noticed that from the responses that we received, Davids methods had a direct
correlation with the skill level increasing throughout the course. Participants keep coming
back to class because they want to learn more, they want to practice, and they want to show
off their skills to their parents and friends. We asked one question in the survey for the kids to
respond to what they liked about the class. We had several responses, but the ones that stood
out were, I liked learning some of the basic tricks. Along with, I loved practicing and
improving my skills. The kids built their skills by going to the classes and practicing with
David, or on their own time. They also built social skills by making new friends that have the
same interests as they do.

Recommendations
More time slots
After conducting this survey from the class, we have found a few recommendations for
the Provo Recreation Center to implement in their skateboarding program to keep up the
success. The first recommendation, more time slots, or more available classes. This was an
apparent code from the evaluation that the parents filled out for the class. Most of the parents
hoped that there were more times, according to the responses, it was often hard to get the kids
to the class. Parents expressed their wishes for a better selection of times available.

28 SKAETBOARDING PROGRAM EVALUTION

Advanced classes
We would also recommend that the Provo Recreation Center look into offering an
advanced class for skateboarding. This was a great introductory class to skateboarding, but
many of the parents that completed the evaluation wanted a class for their children to
continue their skateboarding experience. After completing the class, there are no further
programs for the participants to look forward to. It is our belief that most of the participants,
after working with, David would love to develop more skills within skateboarding.

Same instructor as David

Along with this class, if it is not an option to bring David back, it should be the
Recreation Centers priority to find an instructor that has the same values as David. In the
questions that were asked about the instructor, a 100% of parents approved of the instructor.
It should be a priority to bring David back, and if not, find a new instructor that has the same
qualifications and values as him.

Feedback
A few of the parents wanted personal feedback from the instructor for their kids, which is
why we want to implement an evaluation sheet for each of the students at the end of the class.
This will help the children to know what they can work on while they are not taking the
classes.

Record Davids teaching style

The last recommendation that we suggest for the skateboarding class is that the
Recreation Center gathers information regarding the class from David. David can provide
information regarding what skills he focuses on and his teaching style to help the recreation
center find a similar instructor in the future. With the information provided we hope that if
David were to leave, the recreation center will be able to find an adequate replacement. With

29 SKAETBOARDING PROGRAM EVALUTION

these minor improvements, we feel that the Provo Recreation Center will be more successful
in continuing the skateboarding program.

Limitations
The following section includes four limitations within the evaluation that was conducted.

Quality responses.
The responses we had received from this survey were very intuitive and helpful in
regards to answering our main questions What is making this program so successful?
We were able to receive demographic responses such as where the program participants
reside and if they had a Provo Recreation Center membership, in which if they answered
no, we were interested in how they found out about the skateboard program. We were
also able to receive supportive responses as to whether or not the participants received
what they expected out of the program and if the instructor was beneficial to the program.
Even with the useful data we collected, we were unable to receive all of the responses we
needed thus our response rate was lower than what we had hoped for.

The most important questions to us were forced responses.

Although we did not receive the response rate we had expected, we were able to
obtain useful data in regards to some of the more important questions due to the fact that
we had enabled those responses to be required. The questions that we required to be
answered were usually qualitative questions that asked What was [your childs] favorite
aspect of the program and If you are a repeat to this program, why did you decide to
retake it? We wanted these questions to be free response and required because we
wanted the participant to know that their feedback is valued and that the recreation center
would like to make the program better for the participants. It may have been difficult for

30 SKAETBOARDING PROGRAM EVALUTION

the parents of the participants complete the evaluation because they may not check their
email quite as often or they may have given the Rec Center a junk email address in which
they probably never check.

Incentive suggestion was implemented.

One thing that our group had suggested to the program director was that she
implements an incentive to influence the parents to take the survey. We did not measure
how likely this method would influence the parents into taking the survey, but we do
know that it was a very good incentive that would not detract or diminish the likelihood
of someone taking the survey. Our group also took into consideration the fact that the
program director took our suggestion earnestly, which meant that they took the work that
we were doing seriously. Since this survey did receive quality responses that were helpful
to answering our question, the recreation center has the possibility of improving the way
they dispense the survey in the future. As a draw back there may be few families who do
not have the technology to take an online survey, which could be another reason as to
why we did not receive the amount of responses we were expecting, and so that could be
something that is taken into consideration after the next session of the program.

Questions were clear.

All of the questions on the survey were written out clearly and concisely, which
means that there should not have been any misinterpretation or misconstrued
understandings about what was being asked. We took into consideration the fact that
these parents may have time constrains or uninterested in taking a survey and so we made
sure that our questions were concise and straight to the point, which guaranteed that this
survey would take only a few minutes. We also wanted the survey to hit the main points
of our question, and so we asked free response feedback questions to see if the parents
understood, exactly, what was being asked. It is possible that some of our response may

31 SKAETBOARDING PROGRAM EVALUTION

have not been answered fully due to the fact that not all of the questions were forced
responses, and so some of the responses were left blank, which led to our unexpected
response rate.
The research we had conducted has definitely led us to some positive conclusions, as
well as, gave us some great insight into what factors bring positive success to the
skateboard program. There were several recommendations that were brought up,
however, there are three main ones that should have higher priority. Our first
recommendation to create more time slots, as well as, more classes will benefit the
demand for the program and will give more opportunities for those participants who had
certain circumstances that prevented them from getting into the original one time slot.
Our second recommendation is more of a back up plan in the event that David
decides to leave the Rec. Center and that is to find a new instructor, or instructors, that
hold the same values as David. The participants favored David very much and so that
allowed for the program to have an encouraging environment.
Our third recommendation also goes along with the back up plan and that is to record
Davids teaching style. David created such a positive vision and face for the skateboard
program, and so it would be very beneficial for the Rec. Center if they were to have a
handbook or guide as to what skills and methods David carries out, as well as, how he
teaches the participants. With these three recommendations, the skateboard program will
continue to see it success grow over the years and the community will see how the Provo
Recreation Centers skateboard program will provide them with a positive economic
impact.

16.Parent and Child Question: What would you do to improve this

program?

we wished it lasted longer he had so much fun.

Nothing
Nothing. Coach Davey was amazing.
Offer more skateboarding classes! Once a year for a month isn't enough.
Have it every year please!
More times.
add an assistant to the teacher so they can help every one,
Add more sessions
Offering an assessment class to see the skills of each child and having more than one class for
those skill levels.
Have an option for the next step, we did the beginning class initially but it would be nice to have an
intermediate class as well
Have the program provide popsicles, Coach Davey paid for them out of his money, but it is so hot
out it's really great to have a little cool down. Having a cooler of water available would be great too.
