expressions.
Essential Questions:
The properties of exponents work in any expression by expanding and factoring through the
commutative property of multiplication.
We can use the properties of exponents to simplify complex exponent expressions through the
order of operations.
We use the properties of exponents when simplifying expressions because it is easier than
expanding large exponents such as x52.
Understandings:
Students will understand that
the product of powers property(xnxm=xn+m), the power of a power property [(xn)m=xnm], the
quotient of powers property (xn/xm=xn-m), the zero property (x0=1), and the negative powers
property (x-n=1/xn).
