Understanding by Design Template

Stage 1 - Desired Outcome

Established Goals:

8.EE.1 Know and apply the properties of integer exponents to generate equivalent numerical
expressions.
Essential Questions:

How do the properties work when solving different exponent expressions?

How can we use these properties to simplify complex exponent expressions?
Why do we use the properties of exponents when simplifying expressions?

The properties of exponents work in any expression by expanding and factoring through the
commutative property of multiplication.
We can use the properties of exponents to simplify complex exponent expressions through the
order of operations.
We use the properties of exponents when simplifying expressions because it is easier than
expanding large exponents such as x52.

Understandings:
Students will understand that

Students will know

the product of powers property(xnxm=xn+m), the power of a power property [(xn)m=xnm], the
quotient of powers property (xn/xm=xn-m), the zero property (x0=1), and the negative powers
property (x-n=1/xn).
how the properties work through discovery in expansion.

Students will be able to

Simplify exponent expressions by a) expanding them b) combining like terms c) Giant One
Rule (a number divided by itself is one), and d) division.
Identify common mistakes of different exponent expressions
Compare and contrast the original exponents to the simplified exponents to discover how the
properties of exponents work.

Stage 2 - Assessment Evidence

Summative assessment:
* What authentic performance tasks will students
complete or perform to demonstrate their
understandings?

The attached Unit 8 quiz is the summative

assessment of this unit.
* By what criteria or rubric will the performances or
task be judged?

See attached rubric for evaluative criteria

of the Unit 8 quiz.

Other Evidence:
* What formative assessments (e.g. quizzes, tests, academic
prompts, observations, homework, journals) will students perform to
demonstrate achievement towards the desired results?

Day 1: Product of Powers Property

Scavenger Hunt Worksheet: Graded on completeness.
Students will practice their new understanding of
multiplying exponent expressions together through the
worksheet. They can either use the new property they
learned or expanding. If advanced students finish early,
they can do the second worksheet for more practice

Homework: Students will show their work thoroughly and

teacher will grade for credit if done completely (even if
wrong answers). By following their work, the teacher can
know what the students did not understand. Teacher will
be looking to see if they solved by expansion or by the
properties.

Day 2: Power of a Power Property and Quotient of

Homework: Students will show their work thoroughly and
teacher will grade for credit if done completely (even if
wrong answers). By following their work, the teacher can
know what the students did not understand. Teacher will
be looking to see if they solved by expansion or by the
properties.

Day 3: Zero Property and Negative Powers Property

Students will individually complete the table to
summarize their understanding of the properties of
exponents. Teacher will be looking for completeness and
any possible misconceptions to ensure full understanding
of the unit.
