Project Management is becoming an important method used in businesses today
worldwide. Businesses are implementing projects for just about everything from planning how
to design a product to how they will market it. Many companies have developed policies to help
manage their companies by using project management methods to consistently delivery business
results. Qualified project managers aid in temporary projects allowing businesses to focus on
many things at a time without reducing the every day to day business activities.
Project management is the function of knowledge, skills and techniques, used for project
actions to meet stakeholders needs and expectations. One way to help encourage and prepare
project managers is by obtaining the Project Management Professional Certification which is a
way to help ensure that project management professionals receive the knowledge they need for
preparing them for the smallest projects to larger projects in order to stay ahead in today's
competitive economy (Newell). A project managers goal is to initiate, plan, execute, monitor
and control projects carefully to avoid major delays and cost over runs. According to Project
Management Institute project management draws on ten areas of expertise; integration, cost,
stakeholder management, scope, quality, the necessary communication, time, project
procurement and project risk management (PMI).
A project is a group of task that are planned to be executed within a certain amount of
time and within a certain cost. Most projects are initiated by a request for something specific
such as producing a unique product, service or result for a customer. Projects are normally
temporary activities where a group of individuals work together on a project with a beginning
and end in mind. Projects are normally unique and not within the normal scope of routine
operations, projects are designed to achieve a singular goal. Groups of employees that normally
do not work together are brought together to form a project team, the team might include
individuals from different organizations, across different geographies, and different departments.
The project team has a specific person that is in charge of the project and is called the project
manager. The project manager is to oversee a project and a group of individuals that are brought
together to form a project team. The project manager works with the project team to ensure the
project is delivered on time and within budget successfully meeting the organizations needs. A
project manager will plan the project based off the objectives of the project, scope, timeline,
identifying what requirements are needed, assumptions, resources and other interesting facts to
make sure the project flows as it should while staying on schedule and within budget (PMI).
When conducting a project it is very important that documentation is done throughout the whole
process to record all project activities for future references. Project managers first need to
establish clear expectations to the team by clearly stating the objective, team responsibilities,
time frame to when the project will need to be completed. By doing so each member can be held
accountable this way it helps to avoid any disruptions or misunderstanding when it comes down
to obtaining deliverables and reaching the completion of the project (PMI). Project managers
must communicate to the team any updates or changes that might affect the schedule or the
outcome of the project.
The main goal of Project Management Institute is to help project managers advance,
improve organizational success and helps to further project management professionals mature in

the profession of project management through collaboration, education and research. Project
Management Institute has a goal to help project managers succeed through its globally
recognized standards, by offering certifications, up to date resources, tools, most up to date
academic research, most up to date publications pertaining to project management, professional
development courses and opportunities in networking (PMI). Many businesses have come to the
realization that many business outcomes have come from the delivery of successful projects.
According to McKinsey & Company surveys, nearly 60 percent of senior executives say
constructing strong managerial capabilities such as lean operations; project or ability
management is within their top priorities for their companies to succeed in the future (McKinsey
& Company). Many organizations across the board realize project management matters in aiding
as a way to control costs and improving project results by adhering to project management
methods and strategies which help reduce risk, cut cost and improve the success rates by
enabling them to streamline their delivery process (PMI). Project Management Institute offers
eight different types of certifications that recognize knowledge and competencies including the
Project Management Professional (PMP) credentials held by more than 590,000 professionals
worldwide (PMI). Project Management Institute also offers a wide selection of learning and
professional development opportunities through seminars, e-learning and other Project
Management Institute events and also has a continuing certification program available for project
management professionals (PMI). Project Management Institute allows opportunities for project
managers to share knowledge and strategies, implications and innovations with other leaders
globally through a concert networking connection with other businesses that are also dedicated to
driving their businesses to success. Project management discipline helps projects get underway
and helps control spending and improves project results. With most companies still recovering
from the 2008 recession they have had to work with tighter budgets and less resources when it
comes to projects. Therefore, they have found it imperative to come up with more creative ways
to conduct and carry out projects. This is where the certified project management professional is
needed because they have the knowledge, tools, expertise and experience to plan projects,
execute the project from start to finish following best practices.
One of the greatest advantages for the project manager is the ability to form multidisciplined project teams by selecting the right people with the right talents and skills at the right
time in order to bring about thriving project outcomes meeting the expectations of stakeholder's.
Companies are discovering as their project management strategies mature their business value
increases allowing alignment across their project portfolio (PMI). Many companies have started
to develop project management offices which play a major role in setting particular standards for
project management within organizations. The project management office is responsible for
implementing best practices overseeing project planning and execution based on industry
standards (PMI). The purpose of the project management office is to help decrease failed
projects, aid in helping carry out projects under budget, increasing productivity, delivery projects
in advanced time and boost cost savings, and also helps leaders see a clear return on investment
(ROI) finding the project management office to be very beneficial. The project management
office can be very helpful in coordinating the project, policies, procedures, reports and
documentation and also useful in coordination quality efforts, communication and mentoring
(Newell). The project management office can serve as a link in creating and managing the bond
between business strategy and project results. Project management helps bring people together
into a project team by bringing to the table the ability to coordinate project activities while
motivating the team to work as one to work toward completing the project. The project manager

Angel Edwards #71 -3

and the project team have the ability to focus on the goals of the project with little distractions by
bringing their expert skills, knowledge, and talents together by working in close proximity of
each other the project manager and team develop a mutual relationship among the team to
complete the project with remarkable results such as delivering on time and within budget. By
keeping the project on schedule requires project management discipline and strict management
metrics and project goals that reach across the project team and business unit all the way to
stakeholders. The project management office environment should be a place to allow team
members to bounce ideas off each other. By team projects focusing on the outcome of the
project instead of the process will also aid in the return on investment for the company. By
putting different measurement metrics into place these will also help the company see what they
receive monetary from the project.
Measuring project management by defining the value of the project and the alignment
with the business unit along with the project goals to help ensure that everyone impacted by the
project outcome buys into and comments the necessary financial and human resources needed to
meet the organizations goals. By focusing on metrics, data standardization processes by
streamlining projects will help set standards for projects to help measure processes that deliver
better results such as tracking, communicating, scheduling, and setting measurable delivery goals
and conducting quality relating to poor product issues. The project manager that has the
knowledge and a solid base in standards will be able to create a consistency and flexibility
needed to make valuable decisions when it comes to implementing and planning projects that are
going to bring value to the business. With a good strategic position established at a portfolio
level, project managers and their teams know they are delivering the best results to what the
business requires to maintain its market share in the industry.

As industries grow and a greater need is recognized for projects there is an open door for
the professional that is focused on project management as an essential part of managing projects
that are geared to helping organizations to reach maximum business goals in a strategic manner.
Project management is an increasingly growing field used by small and large businesses all over
the world. With the responsibility for business owners and executives of large corporations
managing projects it is important to have dedicated project managers to oversee projects from
start to finish (Harbour). Skilled project managers that understand and know how to use
effective project management techniques will be an asset to helping with the execution of large
scale projects by delivering on time and within budget without any disruption to the day to day
responsibilities to the rest of the business. Project managers with certified credentials are skilled
in taking on temporary projects with the knowledge, expertise and experience in planning,
budgeting, utilizing recourses, and communication throughout an organization to reach the
completion of the project. Organizations have found that project managers are very beneficial in
monitoring, controlling and scheduling to make sure projects stay on schedule and within budget.
In order for project managers to oversee the project by using a timeline by identifying detailed

Angel Edwards #71 -7

activities for each phase of the project and maintaining a schedule with set target dates based on
the timeline of starting the project, throughout the project to the end date of the project. The time
line is correlated to the scope of the project. Scope refers to the extent of the project how the
project will impact the business and what type of affect will it have on the business. Depending
on the size of the project for example, smaller projects require less and larger projects require
more efforts in details and planning for the project to be successful. Project managers help keep
the project within budget by identifying anticipated cost in order to create a realistic budget by
utilizing internal resources (Harbour).
The planning the project, executing the project, controlling the project as it progresses
and then ending the project. The process of projects repeat over and over again and it is up to the
project manager to stay informed on the status of the project and making sure it is within cost.
According to Mark Langley, president and chief executive of Project Management Institute states
many projects fail due to budget and time overruns and the inability to achieve the objectives
(Cave). The Project Management Institute headquartered near Philadelphia is a not-for-profit
membership association for individuals that have dedicated their professional careers to projects,
project programs, and portfolio management professionals. PMI has found a way to develop
standards and certifies managers so they can attain qualifications and work toward improving
organizational success and bringing more meaning to projects and project managers (Cave).
Langley goes on to imply that even top companies are worried about future strategies and how to
reach the top as quickly as possible. A company must realize all strategic change happens
through project and programs and if a company ignores this fact then they are putting their whole
organization at risk of failing (Cave).
In the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge known as the PMBOK
guide introduces key concepts of most common vocabulary used by project management. These
professionals also discuss the basic process for project management field with the approach of
finding a way to look at projects by using the system management approach by taking inputs
then processing them to produce outputs (Newell). There are stages to becoming a proficient
project manager first by obtaining creditable certifications then initiating the team with a rough
estimate of the project success and a preliminary scope definition and an outline recourses
accounting for the budget of the project. The Guide to the Project Management Body of
Knowledge guide formally describes project management standards as norms and methods of
project management following processes and good practices. The Guide to the Project
Management Body of Knowledge is used as a guideline to guide project management
professionals in the project management life cycle related to concepts and practices. Project
management professionals can use the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge
guide along with different methodologies and tools to establish the frame work of the project and
ensure the overall success of the project. Project management professionals are individuals
focused on applying their knowledge, tools and techniques as good practices along with specific
skills in certain areas of project management and general proficiencies required for the success of
the project, meeting the project objectives (PMI).
As projects continue to increase throughout small and large businesses many companies
are requiring individuals to be certified with a Project Management credentials. By individuals
being certified is a way it affirms the individual has a certain set of skills, knowledge and
experience to manage and oversee the project process. There are a number of project
management credentials that are available to individuals that are interested in obtaining a
certification in project management from general project management certifications to more

Angel Edwards #71 -8

specialized certifications (Remer & Ross, Vol. 26.4). Individuals with certified credentials in one
of the project management levels will help increase their earnings and help individuals stand
apart from uncertified professionals. Project Managers can earn $40,000 to $60,000 on average
depending on the intensity of the project and up to $129,000 for Sr. Project Managers Construction. There are many rewarding benefits to obtaining project management credentials.
However, it also comes with a large range of responsibilities from overseeing small projects to
more large scale intense projects. Project Managers responsibilities range from planning the
project, overseeing the whole process of the project from start to completion, working within the
budget. Project Managers provide the necessary leadership and guidance for the project by
utilizing their knowledge, skills, experience, techniques and expertise to meet the stakeholders
needs and expectations.
The Project Management Institute certifications allow individuals to be recognized as
qualified and competent individuals offering flexibility of transferring skills between industries,
market segments and geographical locations allowing a wide range of opportunities for those
certified with a project management certification. Project Management Institute offers up to date
skills, and encourages professional growth and development. Project Management Institute
offers a variety of ways for project management professionals to stay connected through
seminars and networking opportunities. Project Management Institute offers professional
development courses, up to date resources, tools, academic research, the most up to date
publications pertaining to project management, e-learning courses and seminars (PMI). As
industries continue to increase the use of projects within their organizations the need for expert
certified project management professionals will increase as well.
