Well,manybabiesinSouthKoreaknowthefeeling.AbandoningbabiesinSouthKoreaisa
growingissue.Thesechildrenareforcedtoliveinorphanages,andmanynevergetadopted.
BabiesinSouthKoreaarebeingabandonedbecausetheyeitherhavespecialneeds,theirmothers
arenotmarried,ortheycannotbeputupforadoptionbecauseofthenewlaw.Theamountof
babiesbeingabandonedcoulddecreaseifSouthKoreansweremoreacceptingofimperfections
inpeopleandtheirfamilies.
ThefirstreasonbabiesinSouthKoreaarebeingabandonedisbecausetheyhavespecial
needs.SouthKoreaisasocietythatstrivesforperfection.Peoplewithspecialneedsarelooked
downonbecausetheyarenotperfectinsocietyseyes.Inthepastseveralyears,SouthKorea
hasseenariseininfantabandonment,theresultofaculturethatshamesphysicaldeformity
(Peace).Specialneedschildrenshouldbetreatedwiththesameloveandkindnessasother
children.Thereisnoreasontoabandonachildjustbecausetheyhavespecialneeds.
AnotherreasonthatsomanychildreninSouthKoreaarebeingabandonedisbecause
theirmothersarenotmarried.SouthKoreanculturedoesnotsupportbabiesbeingbornoutof
wedlock.Womenwhohavebabieswithoutbeingmarriedareoftencriticisedbyothers.Instead
offacingthediscrimination,unwedmothersabandontheirbabies.About90percentofSouth

Koreanadopteesareborntounwedmothers(Boroweic).Althoughhavingababybeforegetting
marriedisnotthebestchoice,thesewomenshouldstillbeacceptedbyothersbecauseeveryone
makesmistakes.
SouthKoreanbabiesarealsobeingabandonedbecausetheycannotbeadopted.South
Korearecentlycreatedanewadoptionlaw.Thelawstatesthatwomenmuststaywiththeir
newbornsforthefirstweekoftheirlives,andmustregistertheirbirths.Thelawalsomadeit
harderforSouthKoreanbabiestobeadoptedinternationally.Ifthebabiesarenotregistered,
theycannotbeadopted.Sincemanymothersarenotwillingtomeetthenewadoptionrules,itis
easierforthemtoabandontheirchildren.Thishascausedevenmorebabyabandonment.Pastor
LeeJongrak,apastorwhotakescareofabandonedbabies,hasnoticedasignificantincreasein
thenumberofabandonedbabiessincethenewlawwaspassed.PastorLeestated,

receivedanaverageofabouttwonewbornspermonth.Overthepastyear,thatnumberhasrisen
toabout19(Boroweic).Thenewadoptionlawshouldbemodifiedsomorepeoplewillabideby
it.
TheabandonmentofbabiesinSouthKoreaisaproblem,andsomepeoplearetryingto
improvethesituation.PastorLeeJongrakisamanwhotakescareofabandonedbabiesthatare
leftinhisdropbox.Hecreatedthedropboxforwomentoputtheirbabiesininsteadof
abandoningthem.PastorLeehassavedmanybabiesthroughtheuseofhisdropbox.Since
2009,Leesbabyboxhassaved600children,someofthemdepositedthereonlyhoursafter
birth(Peace).TheJerusalemMinistryisanothergrouptryingtohelpinSouthKorea.Thegoal
oftheJerusalemMinistryistomakeabandonedchildrenthatarelivinginorphanagesfeelloved,
aswellaseducatethem.

Achildwithspecialneeds,anunwedmother,andinabilitytobeadoptedarethe
reasonsthatbabiesinSouthKoreaarebeingabandoned.Thesechildrengrowup,neverknowing
whotheirparentswereorwhytheywereabandonedbythem.Whilethelivesofthesechildren
arerough,peoplearedoingtheirbesttomakeapositiveimpactonthem.Maybeonedaybabies
inSouthKoreawillstopbeingabandonedandtheirsocietywillbemoreacceptingoftheflaws
allhumanshave.
