"Understanding Music Today" Evaluation

1. I think the premise that background knowledge about any subject music in particul
ar is necessary for a meaningful discussion and understanding. Thus it is imperativ
e that we know as much as we can about other cultures to relate to our own music
making. Initially, I was more concerned with music that I enjoyed listening to
and only wanted to fous on that, but after taking the course, I have discovered
much about music of other cultures and feel that the course helped me reach this
realization.
2. I learned that music is so much more than just sound. It has evolved over tim
e to adapt to people's needs and interests and is a reflection of the developmen
t of human knowledge for better or worse.
3. This book succinctly elucidated musical concepts to the layperson from an eth
nological perspective and is useful not only to musicians, but also others who a
re interested in the subject.
4.Honestly only read excerpts mostly in the fall, but recall reading to be a fai
rly enjoyable experience. Some terms come to mind "Power Chord" was bolded, but
not sure why it was so important.
5. Not sure if you already have, but Balinese and Javanese gamelan from the Indo
nesian music tradition is a favorite of mine, and I hope (I'm sure) you have inc
luded it!
Enjoy your sabbatical Dr. Rice, hope you enjoy writing this book!
