Portfolio Reflection Outcome One

The acronym LEARN (look, elaborate, analyze, revise, new trial) is used as a guide for exploring
this outcome and the impact on the writer. Knowledge, skills and ability (KSA) are used to provide
examples of meeting objectives. Outcome one looks at collaborative leadership. This outcome can be
elaborated on as an expectation for a nursing leader/manager. The ability to work with every department
and team member involved in patient care is critical to safe patient care and resonates with provisions 1
and 4 of the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics.
This writer had met the objective through knowledge of the roles and regulations required of
departments, organizations, and individual caregivers, achieved through course reading assignments. This
knowledge can influence collaborative leadership skills through understanding how these entities interact
and collaborate in the provision of health services. The skills for this objective are demonstrated through
successful achievement of group assignments which require the ability to interact effectively with peers.
Collaborative skills are developed through interaction with fellow students via discussion boards
which provide an opportunity for sharing ideas and experiences. Taking both a leadership and a follower
role in class assignments has provided the opportunity to practice communication and leadership abilities,
as well as cooperate in a professional manner. Reading texts and articles has provided insight into the
impact that nursing has on populations, legislation, and advancing the professionalism of nursing.
Discussion board exchange has afforded this writer with the ability to ask questions, gain insight, and
improve personal perspectives from peers who practice in differing specialties.
Reviewing this outcome provides this writer with the opportunity to incorporate the lessons into
practice through improved communication and collaboration skills, and an increased awareness of the
interconnectivity of interdisciplinary roles. Examples of coursework have been chosen to reflect this skill.
These examples include an interview with a nurse manager that provides insight into the role of
leadership, and a collaborative analysis toward improving a clinical activity.
