Name: Lidia Sanchez

Topic/Title: Friendship Fruit Salad

Target Age Group: 3 and 4 year olds

Purpose/Objectives/Outcomes:

Counting fruit and mixing ingredients can teach this child a lot about math
and reasoning skills. This activity will support his/her growing ability to use
one-to-one correspondence and will build her/his counting skills

The students will be able to:

Count the fruits, quantify small group of items up to five. Recognize colors,
talk about shapes, textures and taste, and use fine motor skills.

Assessment of student outcomes:

Children showed interest for the activity, two children mentioned that they
favorite fruit was banana, and two other children chose the oranges as
their favorite fruit, the rest mentioned that they liked all kinds of fruit
Children 4 years old counted correctly the five fruit groups. (5 apples. 5
oranges and 5 bananas) Children 4 years old were able to use the knife
and cut small pieces of fruit, two children counted all the fruit pieces in
total up to 15. Three year old children were able to count up to five one of
them counted saying the number words. Three year old children used the
knife under close supervision and to cut soft fruit. Children talked about
fruits they eat at home and that mom cut the fruit for them.

Curriculum Expectations/State or National Standards addressed:

20a. Counting
20b. Quantifies
a. Counts groups of objects using one-to-one correspondence (one object
for each number word)
b. Counts a collection of up to 10 items using the last counting word to tell,
How many?

Materials/Resources/Technology:

3-5 apples, oranges, bananas, and any other fruit that child likes
plastic bags
large spoon
bowls or cups
plastic knives

Instructional Strategies, Accommodations, and Student activities:

I introduced the fruits and the bowls and utensils to be used in this cooking
activity. I also gave some rules in how to use the plastic knives. I explained
children how we must handle the knife for safety purpose.
I gave support to children by giving simple directions at each individual
learning level. For three year old children, I gave one direction at the time
and I provided pieces of fruit ready to be cut in small pieces. For children
four years old I gave two steps directions. I was assisting three year old
children with the use of the knife, and supported children in following each
step at the time.

Self-Evaluation/Assessment:

This activity was challenging, because children were not very familiar in the
use of the knife specially children new to the program. Safety of the
children was the priority in this activity. This activity was of the interest of
the children and they participated with enthusiasm. They were asking can

we eat yet? before they had finished cutting the fruit. Children four year
old were able to count the fruit groups and they gave some ideas in what
other fruits we can use next time. I think this activity was successful
because children got engaged, they used number words and they were
thinking in mathematics terms. Children also got engaged in social
interactions with other peers they had to pass the fruits and they remind
each other the amount of fruits they needed get. One of them said I have
fewer apples than bananas; I need more pieces of apple.

Skills and student behaviors to be worked on next time:

I think for next activity, I will work more in following multiple steps
directions for older children and for the younger children to develop fine
motor skills. I think children need to practice more in using the plastic knife
to cut food, so they will get used to handle these food utensils with more
confidence. I need to choose activities to cover these areas. Younger
children need to strength fine motors and that will help them manipulate

better the cooking utensils. Both activities will help children develop helpself skills.
