17. The octet rule is a chemical rule of thumb that states that atoms of main-group elements
tend to combine in such a way that each atom has eight electrons in its valence shell,
giving it the same electron configuration as a noble gas. Atoms want to be stable, which
means having a full octet. For some elements, its easier to gain electrons to have a full
outer shell, while others would be closer to a full octet by losing electrons.
