There are a few things I want students to consider as we are moving forward with this unit. At the end of the unit
we will have a discussion based off of what you were able to extract from the lessons regarding these questions:
What is the result, or what are the results of the elements of art and the principles of design working together?
Can these principles be found in other different forms of subject matter? Like science, or mathematics, or even music?
How do these principles of design take effect on art? Does it make the work more appealing, more understandable, more
convincing, etc.?
Where else in our lives to we see these principles of design being used?
By the end of this unit students will understand the principles of two-dimensional design and apply design
strategies and approaches to communicate ideas and create concepts and forms across a two-dimensional range
design.
Students will apply the principles of design and elements of Art in the creation of my work, in critical dialog, and in
applied writing activities in art criticism, aesthetics, and history.
Students will also use a broad range of art- and design-related vocabulary in critical dialog and in applied writing
activities in art criticism, art history, and art aesthetics.
Students will use these principles to create an original work of art that reflects their understanding and application
of the principles of design and experiences they've faced in their lives.
Unit Summary:
This unit we will cover art design principles that will help students to use the elements of art to the best
of their abilities in the creation of a composition of original artwork we will begin at the end of the
unit. Within each lesson we will cover 3 principles and in the end students will have a rich understanding
of what these principles are and how to use them. Since this is a digital unit, students will be actively
engaged in learning the material through different forms of multimedia and technology. Using this new
understanding of all the principles of design we will then create a narrative fantasy painting of important
events that have occurred in our lives. Further explanation of this is found under Lesson three, and
details will be gone over with students in class. An example of my own is found on the home page below
the unit summary on the left, and a famous painter whom my work is based off of, Marc Chagall is found
just right of it. This way students will apply what theyve learned. They will be assessed throughout the
processes of this unit and directly following application through a summative essay and the rating scale
assessment they will use to score one another on.
