TheseventhseededBouchard,whoracedthroughtheopeningsetin29minutes,endedupspendingjustovertwohoursinwhatturnedintoabattlewithherRomanianopponent.
"IfeltlikeIstartedreallywell,Iwantedtokeepitgoing,"saidBouchard."Shehadsomegoodshotsandmyleveltotallydroppedthat'snotreallygood."
Bouchard,fromWestmount,Que.,andBeguspentmorethananhourplayingasecondsetlitteredwithsevenbreaksofserve,withtheCanadianlosinga31leadandeventuallythe
setonadoublefault.
BouchardreachedthesemifinalsorbetteratthefirstthreeGrandSlamtournamentslastyear,winningnineofthefirst10gamesagainstIrinaCameliaBegu,butlostsevenofthenext
ninetobepushedtoathirdsetforthefirsttimeinthetournament.
Afterservingadoublefaultonsetpointtoendthesecond,Bouchardtookashortbreakbeforereturningtocompletea61,57,62winoverNo.42rankedBegu,whohadtakenout
No.9seededAngeliqueKerberinthefirstround.
"Itookagoodlonglookinthemirror,andkickedmyselfinthebuttabit,"shesaid."BackonthecourtIrelaxedandtriedtoplaymygame.IalwaysdobetterwhenIdothat.ButIwantto
dobetterinmynextmatch."
Afterthreestraightsetswins,Bouchardjokedthatshewentthreesetsforacoupleofreasons.
"ClearlyIneedmorepractice!"shesaid,thenturnedtothesectionoffansknownastheGenieArmywhosupportherinAustralia."It'snothorribleplayinglongeronthiscourt.Ijust
wantedtodothatforyouguys,andforthemtopracticemoresongs."
Bouchardcorrectedmanyofhererrorsinthefinalset,breakinginthefirstgameonthewaytothewin.

Sharapovaadvances
MariaSharapovawillmeetBouchardinthequarterfinalsafteradvancingwithcontrastingwinsonSunday.
SecondseededSharapovawasbrokenonceinthefirstsetbeforewinningthelasteightgamesofher63,60fourthroundvictoryoverNo.21seededPengShuai.
FivetimeGrandSlamwinnerSharapovahasa30careerrecordagainstBouchard,includingacomebacksemifinalwinattheFrenchOpenlastyear.Shehadarougherroadtothe
quarterfinalsinMelbournePark,though,havingtosavematchpointsinhersecondroundwinoverRussianqualifierAlexandraPanova.Sharapovalostinthefourthroundat
MelbourneParklastyear,whenBouchardreachedthesemifinalsinhertournamentdebut.
"Ifeellikesomethingorsomeonegavemeanotherchance,"Sharapovasaid."LastyearIlostinthefourthroundhere,gettingtothequartersisreallyspecial."
SharapovasaidBouchardwasthemostconsistentplayerattheGrandSlamsin2014,andshehadtobeatherbesttobeatthe20yearoldCanadian.
