FUTURE OF ONCOLOGY

Management of Oncology has taken a paradigm shift in the last decade and will change further in the future.

Traditionally majority of cancer cases were looked upon more as palliative or terminal. The attitude of the public,
General Physician and treating Doctors had been geared for supportive and palliative care. But with the better
understanding of cancer, improvements in Bio-technology and superior advancement in therapy the outlook has
changed. Integration of all the above, leads to better molecular imaging and appropriate pathological staging.
This has resulted in personalized care and appropriate treatment regime. This regime may include organ
preservation, targeted treatment, leading to better quality of life possibly longer survival. All this has been
achieved because of the following reasons:

a. Through increased awareness, cancer can be detected at an early stage and a long term control is
possible.
b. Through Genetic counseling certain cancers can be treated and also detected early.
c. Patient with advanced disease receives appropriate staging, proper clinical pathological staging. This has
led to personalized care. For eg: Not all Breast cancer are of same nature and similarly not all Lung cancer
are same. Individualized treatment has to be provided for better quality of care and hence longer period
of life.

Preserving Organs such as Breast, Larynx, and Colon will be the order of the day. Instead of extensive
surgery, targeted surgery will become the norm of the day. Similarly, in Radiation -Targeted Therapy i.e.
whole Body Stereo tactic Radio surgery is gaining momentum and is becoming one of the best modality
with little side effects. In future proton therapy will add further value particularly for children. Targeted
therapy is also playing a major role in Biologies and other cancer therapies.

Organs specific team management is truly the future of Oncology. Cancer should also be accepted as a
lifestyle disease.
