Reflections:
Throughout the research, observations, and implications of my
goal for PS1, I have learned that building a sense of community in the
classroom is absolutely crucial for student success. I have had the
chance to spend time in 5 different classrooms in River Heights, all of
which were classrooms that value strong relationships between teacher
and students, as well as respectful actions and language. One benefit
that I did not originally foresee that came out of building these
relationships is the amazing classroom management strategies. Ive
gotten a chance to see how a positive atmosphere makes a teachers
life easier when it comes to giving directions and managing their class.
The classroom that I was placed in for my practicum embraces all of
these ideas to their highest potential. In my own lessons I have trued
to model my Tas techniques. The biggest social intervention: that I
had to do was to call for the students to get into a quiet community
circle in the middle of busy math stations. The community circle is an
already well-established routine where the students know they have to
sit quietly until it is there turn to talk. During the circle I asked each
one of them to share how they feel when the classroom gets unruly
and too loud for them to do their work properly. Since this is such a
safe place for students to share their thoughts, all of the grade 1s
were very open about their emotions with me. In all of the 5 classes I
observed each one used some form of community circle.
Before my PS1 practicum I was not very familiar with the phrase,
fill your bucket phrase. I decided to emphasize it in my DPA lessons,
winter tradition lessons as well as every day reminders to students. I
think it is most important for grade 1 students to realize their actions
and words can have huge positive or negative impacts on their peers.
Whether it was a tag game where you had to unfreeze someone by
saying something nice, or a kind word placed in someones shoe
(Dutch tradition instead of a stocking), my students were pleasantly
surprising in how honest and thoughtful they were each time they were
asked to fill someone elses bucket. My next steps for my goal would
be to continue to try class and community builders in class as well as
gain more information from professors and teachers I observe.

Observation Days:
Grade 1
-community circle
-picture your feelings on your individual whiteboard/explanation (the
students are so honest and comfortable with sharing with the rest of
the class)
-TA constantly reminds students of the values of mutual respect
-Filling your bucket
-reading a book, reaction to how the students felt about what was
going on, understanding the characters feelings
Grade 2
-stand up and share (builds confidence in public speaking, appreciation
of what others have to say)
-community circle (what did you do on the weekend?, How are you
feeling today?)
-teacher uses respectful language such as thank you sir
-Affirmation of the week (Im filled with creative ideas)
-passes out mirror in the community circle and the students say
it into the mirror
(this will be perfect for coaching various teams as well)
-pretend fire pit in the middle of the carpet
Grade 4
-built a sense of community at the beginning of the year through
development of tribes (groups) for DEAR, group work, etc.
-students could choose one person they really wanted to be with as a
sense of safety and security in large groups
-super hero theme and mascot for the class
-words that describe their Super hero class (creative, kind, generous,
etc.)
-Crazy Brain Break games
Grade 4 Class #2
-this was a gym class observation
-talk at the end of the dodge ball game about what went wrong and
what needs to happen next for it to go smoothly
-get into a circle at the gym and students raised their hands on how to
make the next gym class better
-very honest students about how they felt when someone was
conceited about winning
Grade 6
-still have a carpet for sharing and community circle even at this level

-group work is very organized and quiet, the teacher talked about
resecting others space and volume levels so that they can learn and
get their work done too
-iPods to help certain students focus with soft music
-music played softly in the classroom, I think this sets up a nice
atmosphere.
