CourseDescription
Inthiscourse,studentswillexploreawiderangeofcurriculumareas,includingliterature,science,math,music,art,and
movement,inordertodiscovercontentandmaterialsthatareappropriateforpreschoolagechildren,andinfants.
Studentswillalsolearnhowtoprovideappropriateopportunitiesforchildrentoachieveidentifiedcurriculargoals.
Prerequisites:EDUC21FoundationsinEarlyChildhoodEducation,EDUC84EarlyChildhoodDevelopment
Corequisites:None.

LearningOutcomes
Uponsuccessfulcompletionofthiscourse,studentswillbeableto:
1. Applyanunderstandingofhowthetheorybehindplayisappliedtoallareasofplanningforyoungchildren
2. Makeconnectionsbetweenexpandingchildren'slearninganddevelopmentandpreparedplayenvironments
3. Begintoconnecttherelationshipbetweenobservationsofchildren'splayinterestsandplanningthatwillextend

ProgramStandards
TheMinistryofTraining,CollegesandUniversitiesoverseesthedevelopmentandthereviewofstandardsforprogramsof
instruction.Eachcollegeisrequiredtoensurethatitsprogramsandprogramdeliveryareconsistentwiththesestandards,
andmustassiststudentstoachievetheseessentialoutcomes.
ThiscoursecontributestoProgramStandardsasdefinedbytheMinistryofTraining,CollegesandUniversities(MTCU).
Programstandardsapplytoallsimilarprogramsofinstructionofferedbycollegesacrosstheprovince.Eachprogram
standardforapostsecondaryprogramincludesthefollowingelements:
Vocationalstandards(thevocationallyspecificlearningoutcomeswhichapplytotheprogramofinstructionin
question)
Essentialemployabilityskills(theessentialemployabilityskillslearningoutcomeswhichapplytoallprogramsof
instruction)and
Generaleducationrequirement(therequirementforgeneraleducationinpostsecondaryprogramsofinstruction
thatcontributetothedevelopmentofcitizenswhoareconsciousofthediversity,complexityandrichnessofthe
humanexperienceand,thesocietyinwhichtheyliveandwork).

PLARusestoolstohelplearnersreflecton,identify,articulate,anddemonstratepastlearningwhichhasbeenacquired
throughstudy,workandotherlifeexperiencesandwhichisnotrecognizedthroughformaltransferofcreditmechanisms.
PLARoptionsincludeauthenticassessmentactivitiesdesignedbyfacultythatmayincludechallengeexams,portfolio
presentations,interviews,andwrittenassignments.Learnersmayalsobeencouragedandsupportedtodesignan
individualdocumentationpackagethatwouldmeetthelearningrequirementsofthecourse.Anystudentwhowishesto

EvaluationComponents:(assignments,quizzes,tests,presentation,labs,andreports)

Allevaluationcomponentsaredueonthedateandtimestatedonthiscourseoutline.

AlltestsandassignmentresultswillberecordedintheD2Lgradebookandreleasedtothestudentswithintwo
weeksaftertheassignment/testduedate.Testquestionsmayormaynotbereturnedtothestudents,however,
facultywilltakeupthetestmaterials/conceptshighlightingareasofstrengthsandweaknessidentifiedinthe
studentresponses.Thiscanbedoneonlineorinclass.

Ifthereisaconcernorquestionaboutthemarkingofatestorassignment,thestudentmustcontactthefaculty
withinoneweekofthereleaseofthegradewithevidence(textbook,reputablewebsite,lecturenotes)toprovide
rationalefortheirposition.

Makeuparrangementsfortests/assignmentsarenotnormallyallowed,however,intheeventofadocumented
illness,emergencyordeathofanimmediatefamilymember,whichprohibitsthestudentfromwritingthetest,
makeupprovisionsmaybeprovided.Allowanceswillonlybeconsideredifthecommunication(emailorvoicemail)
tothefacultyoccursbeforethescheduledtest/assignment.Inthecaseofamissedtest,failuretoinformfaculty
beforethetestwillresultinamarkof0.Rescheduledtestmustbewrittenwithinthreeschooldaysfromthe
originallyscheduleddate.Whenlongtermillnessorotherextremecircumstancemakesitimpossibleforthetestto
betakenwithinthreedays,thesituationwillbedealtwithonanindividualbasis.

Lateassignmentswillbepenalized10%adayforthefirstthreedays.Afterthefourthday,theassignmentwillbe
gradedasazero.

Coursesmaycontainspecificassessmentsthatrequiresuccessfulcompletioninordertodemonstrate
accomplishmentofthelearningoutcomesforthecourse.Thesewillbespecificallydetailedoneachcourse
outline.

Finalgradesarebasedonthelevelofacademicachievementaccordingtotheevaluationplanstatedinthecourse
outline.Facultywillnotofferadditionalassignmentsorcreditrecoverytoindividualstudentsbeyondthosecitedin
thiscourseoutline.

StudentEngagement

Studentsandfacultyareexpectedtointeractinaprofessionalandpositivemanner.Thisincludes:being
respectful,settinghighexpectationsandstandards,demonstratingprofessionalism,beingengaged,staying
connectedandcommunicatingeffectivelyandbeingconsistent.SeetheStudentRightsandResponsibilitiesPolicy
forfurtherclarity.
Foradultlearnersinpostsecondaryeducation,thecollegecannotstipulatethatattendanceismandatory(except
fortestingpurposes),however,researchhasshownthatattendancecontributessignificantlytosuccessinthe
classroom,laborfield.Somecourseshowever,focusalmostexclusivelyondemonstratedskillbasedapplied
learningpractice.Attendanceintheseclassesisthereforehighlyrecommended.Earlyinthesemester,individual
facultywillprovidespecificattendanceexpectationsforthesecourses.Ifclasses/labsaremissed,forthese
courses,thelearnerwillbeinjeopardyoffailingthecourse,semesterand/orprogram.Studentsaresolely
responsibleforacquiringmissedclassroomworkincludinghandoutsandassignments.
Studentswhoarelateforclassareadisruptiontotheirclassmatesandhaveanegativeimpactonthelearning
environment.Yourfacultywillsharehis/herlatepoliciesearlyinthesemester.Forreasonsrelatingtoclassroom
managementandorlaboratorysafety,latestudentsmayberefusedentry.
Inanefforttopromoteoptimalengagement,electroniccommunicationdevices,exceptthoseapprovedby
LearningSupportServicesandtheprofessormustbeturnedoff/silencedforthedurationoftheclass.Electronic
communicationdevicesmaybeutilizedforthepurposesofclassroombasedworksuchasnotetakingandresearch
only.Theuseofearbudsconnectedtoasourceofmusicissimilarlyprohibitedduringclass.
Thefacultyreservestherighttomodifythecoursesequenceinthisoutlinetobettermeettheneedsofthestudent
groupandtofacilitatelearning.
