people discussed has had on their lives.

V.

Teaching Procedures
1. Introduction/Anticipatory Set
i. The students will be asked if they can think of one way that immigrants or the
descendants from the immigrant culture have affected their lives. Following this
question the students will sit through a PowerPoint about an Asian immigrant and a
descendent from an Irish immigrant and a descendant of an African Immigrant and
how something they created has had a lasting effect upon our culture.

they will watch short videos about Henry Ford, Lewis Latimer, and Jerry Yang.
Before the students leave for the centers they will be told that they will have to
choose one of the three people to write a paper on discussing how that person has
affected their lives. During these videos the students will take notes on a sheet of
paper.
3. Guided Practice
i. The teacher will demonstrate for the students what is expected at the centers by
demonstrating for them with an additional video, showing the students. The teacher
will stop the video when the birth date, death date, and information about their
achievement, such as what it was, when they started, when it was completed to show
what type of information they should take down in their notes.
4. Independent Practice
i. The students will split into predetermined teacher assigned groups and take turns
visiting the different centers to watch the videos. The students will be given enough
time to watch the videos twice so the students can make sure they have the necessary
information.
5. Differentiation
Lesson will be differentiated based on the specific learning and behavioral needs of
students in classroom, such as ELL, gifted (above level), and remediation (below
level).
6. Closure

i. The students will had in their notes to be checked by the teacher. The notes will
be checked for correct information and the details specified during the guided
practice. The teacher will check the notes and hand them back to the students.
Students will be docked half a point for incorrect information and one point if
they are missing the specified information. Along with their notes the students
will hand in a short paragraph stating which person they wish to write their paper
on, and what connection the students has made between that persons achievement
and their own life. This will be graded on spelling and correct information
regarding the persons achievement. The students will be docked a point for
incorrect information and 1/4 point for spelling and grammatical errors.
B. Summative Assessment
i. The students will write a paper on one of the people who was discussed in class
and how that persons achievement has made an effect on the students life. The
paper is to be a minimum of one page due the following day. The students are
allowed to do additional research on the person if they choose, including the
source of the information at the end of the paper, however it is not necessary. The

Reflection on Planning

THE EFFECTS OF IMMIGRANTS AND THEIR CULTURES ON THE UNITED STATES

This lesson is an introduction for the students on how other cultures and how
immigrants have helped to form our culture and improve our lives. I have decided to
make this a more independent lesson to help students learn to independently take
notes as they will need to into in later grades. This lesson plan is straightforward in
expectations and all details will be explained to the students before they begin work.
This information will help tie the information the students have learned up to this
point in the unit together. I had to supplement the material as the information in the
textbook was weak. During my search for the videos for the lesson, I was bombarded
with issues. During my online searches, I had encountered many different
pornographic videos when searching for innocuous terms. This experience reminded
me to remember to encourage my students to not search for additional videos without
supervision if they choose to do additional research, and to make sure they only use
websites that end in .org or .edu or history.com.
