Assessment Plan
I chose to do my lesson on unions for my third and final mini lesson. The lesson includes
a pre-assessment, during assessment, and post assessment. Each lesson was created with the
intention of testing what the students learned. My lesson objective was, Provided with paper,
the students will be able to answer 3 out of 5 questions correctly on a quiz based on unions. I
kept the students engaged by showing pictures, asking questions, and finally by opening up
conversations with the students.
The purpose of the pre-assessment is to determine the students prior knowledge of
unions. Before coming into the class none of the students had any prior knowledge of unions,
but they still knew the general idea of them. The purpose of the in class activity is to keep the
students engaged in the material, which helps to keep them from doing something that may get
them into trouble. The purpose of the post-assessment is to see what students learned from the
lesson. While my pre-assessment mainly consisted of general questions pertaining to what the
students might know about unions, my post-assessment was more structured and consisted of 5
questions. The questions consisted of:
1. True or False. The American Socialist Party was one of the first major unions in
America.
2. True or False. There is a hierarchy in place during a strike.

3. Which of the following is a con for unionizing? A. Workers have a unified voice B.
They make it easier for businesses to start up C. Makes the cost of living go up D.
Creates a safer working environment
4.

____ ____ closed down his own plant in order to show workers what would happen if
they unionized. A. Andrew Carnegie B. Cornelius Vanderbilt C. Nikki Haley D. Roger
Milliken

5. True or False. Working conditions were better off before unions started in the 1880s.
When administering the pre-assessment I did my best to get the students involved in telling
me what they knew about unions, regardless if it was correct or not. From what I gathered from
the pre-assessment the students had a general idea of what a union was, but they did not know
any specifics.
For the during assessment, the students were informally assessed through calling out names
to get their opinion on the subject. I would also ask a question to the class as a whole to get them
to participate. During the class I would also walk around the room to make sure that everyone
was participating.
