the em per or, Claudius II, decided to ban m ar r iage for all m en in the

So, the next tim e you give a loved one a gift or car d for Valentine's
Day, r em em ber the holiday isx not a new one and is about m or e

I am creative and stylish
I wonder if the sky will ever stop spinning
I hear the wolf howling in the night before I sleep
I see the world before me go dark
I am creative and stylish
I understand that if we don't stop what we do
we won?t have a world to live in
I say we will get through this
I dream of a better world
I try to keep the world a better and safe place
I hope I can wake up from this nightmare and hope it

"What If"
What if I could play for the Seahawks?
I might play volleyball in the Olympics,
What if I had all the Nerf guns there were?
I could eat cotton candy everyday for my whole life,
What if I could win a billion dollars?
I would be the most famous athlete in the world,
What if all of this came completely true?

we asked students to submit their

On the field warming up
The big game of the year
The roar of the crowd
Go Team! Go!
My heart beats faster
We huddle before we play
We line up then we say
Go,set,hut
That's all I hear and we're off
I see bodies colliding together
The play is in action
The roaring of the crowd
We make the winning points
The big game of the year!

"BEING DIFFERENT"
Being different isn?t always easy
They stare at you and it tends to make you queasy
The way they see you isn?t for who you are
It?s for the stereotypes that have brought you this far
But never stop being yourself
Because you are the one on the higher shelf
You are the best that you can be
You be you and I?ll be me
I love you just the way you are
You are a beautiful, unique, shining star
If they don?t love you how I do,
Find new friends because yours aren?t true blue
Being different is sometimes hard
But you can make it through, you are a shining STAR!

Book Review :
Diary of a W impy Kid: Dog Days
By Cartrell W eathers
The best part of the book is when
Greg realizes that a public pool is
filled with germs.
Wow! Diary of a Wimpy Kid was one
of the best books I ever read. On a
scale of 1-10 I will rate it as a 9.
I would recommend this book to 6-8
graders.

Greg believes that a country club his

friend invites him to is going to be
the worst part of his summer. But,
it's the complete opposite- until his
brother gets involved. You will just
have to read it to know more details.

WHAT WOULD DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING

JR. THINK ABOUT OUR WORLD TODAY?
By Students in Mrs. Gleason's
8th grade LA classes
I think he w ould have m ixed
feelings. Ther e is a lot of good and
bad things today. The good thing is
that m any places ar e no longer
segr egated. Ther e is no m or e
segr egation. Now people of all
r aces, color s, can have good jobs
and nice hom es. They can be
them selves w ithout having to fear
that m uch hate. Now people ar e
r eally accepting. That's all the
r easons w hy Dr. M LK Jr. w ould be
feeling good about today.
Som e r easons w hy he w ouldn't feel
okay about today ar e as follow :
although slaver y w as abolished it
never stopped r acism . Ther e ar e
still r acist people. Also, people ar e

"We learn
history for a
reason. We
learn to not
relive history."
still scapegoating r aces and other
things. People ar e m ean tow ar ds
r aces, r eligions, sexuality, and so
on. That's r eally sad actually
because w e lear n histor y for a
r eason. We lear n to not r elive
histor y. If people can't m ove on
and gr ow up as a per son things
w on't ever fully change. I still

think Dr. M ar tin Luther

King Jr. w ould be happy
w ith the pr ogr ess w e have
m ade, but w ith som e other
things not so m uch.

w ould be a hor r ible place.

Thank you Dr. King.
By Alex Gar cia

By Ricky Cor ona

I feel that Dr. M ar tin Luther King

w ould be a little pleased about our
w or ld today. I think this because
the Jim Cr ow law s ar e no m or e, so
ther e is no m or e r acial
segr egation. Now ther e ar e law s
about r acism , so I think he w ould
be ver y pleased w ith that. We all
live together as br other s and
sister s, and r espect one another.
We could all get along, w hites and
black , M exicans and Chinese, and
all types or r aces or r eligion.
It is all alm ost per fect. Ther e is no
r acial segr egation, and law s
against r acism , but it's still not
over. Ther e ar e still people w ho
ar e r acist, yeah. Som etim es they
ar e being facetious, but som e
people ar e not. In the new s
ever yday ther e ar e usually r epor ts
of r acism . Fr om w hite cops
attacking innocent blacks, to
blacks killing blacks. I think he
w ould not like our w or ld today
because of these r easons.
I feel he w ould be m aking m or e of
a differ ence w ith the r acism . I feel
he w ould possibly stop r acism , and
stop a lot of violence, and m ake the
US a better place. He m ade a big
differ ence befor e, if only som eone
like him w ould do that now, and
stop the violence. If it w er en't for
Dr. M ar tin Luther King the w or ld

I think he w ould be disappointed

in our w or ld and society today. I
think this because he alw ays talked
about ever yone getting along no
m atter w hat r ace, r eligion, etc.
they w er e, yet... all over the w or ld
ther e is judgem ent about w hat
people look like and w hat people
believe in.
Also, he said to love one another
no m atter w hat they did to you or
w hatever happened to you, but w e
still tr eat each other as enem ies.
For exam ple, ther e is so m uch w ar
and ter r or ism happening all over
the w or ld because so m any places
hate each other kill each other.
Finally, I think he w ould be
disappointed w ith how fr iends and
fam ilies ar e tur ning on each other.
I think this because he said no
m atter the situation, you should
alw ays see love. But now, so m any
people have killed each other for
goods and social status, that so
m any people have no tr ust in their
peer s or the gover nm ent.

while my parents work. They

Depending on the age of
your siblings you could give
them coloring sheets, put on
a movie, or let them do
something special lik e an
easy board game that
doesn't require intensive
instruction. One w ay to get
them to listen to you is to tell
them they have something
lik e an earlier bedtime or no
dessert after dinner. You
could also pull the "I can call
mom/ dad" card. Another
w ay to occupy them is to
play a game of hide-and-seek
and not look for them for at
the most 7 min. That w ay you
at least get 7 minutes of
quiet and a movie you can
get up to 2 hrs of quiet. Hope
this helped!

?Melophobia? Cage The Elephant Review By: Lilah Brown

Cage The Elephant?s third studio album, Melophobia, has a mixture of old and new
sounds. The American rock band from Kentucky released this record in October of
2013. The actual word ?melophobia? means fear of music, ironically. In my opinion,
this is the best album that they have made yet. The tracks are sort of schizophrenic
with their tone color and lyrical meaning and instrumental solos. One of my personal
favorite tracks is Spiderhead, which includes some melodic guitar parts, intriguing
lyrics, but my absolute favorite part of the song is the wicked guitar solo at the end.
The most popular song from the record is called Come A Little Closer, which is a very
instrumentally layered song, not my favorite on the album, but an honestly a good
song. Cigarette Daydreams is another track that has been well liked. I enjoyed just
about everything on this track, the song is a tender ballad with softer vocals and
simple guitar parts. I liked all of the tracks on the album, but I won?t go into detail
about them. I would recommend this album to anyone who likes The Strokes or MGMT
or anything in the genre of indie rock.

Panther Bucks
By Cartrell Weathers

Be sure to collect more Panther Bucks. You can earn Panther Bucks by doing good
deeds for others. So, if you see so someone drop a pencil or something, be kind
and pick it up for them. That will surely earn you a Panther Buck. Also, you can
earn Panther Bucks by being respectful and responsible. There are many reasons
you should want to earn Panther Bucks. One is because if your study hall collects
a lot of bucks, you will all get a chance to play a dodge ball game during study
hall. So keep collecting those Panther Bucks!

Authors Among Us...

The Adventures of Mae Kolinski: Jack Argleton and the Piratesby:

Daryana Garza
My name is Mae Kolinski. This is just perfect.
For the past couple of days, I?ve read a book,
and I received a note from nowhere saying
?You must be prepared to be in a whole new
world.? The next day the note said ?You will
stay there until you can figure out how to
leave.? I was warped to the Argleton Ship. Jack
Argleton met with his pirate crew that did
most of his bidding. All I remember is that I fell
asleep, after reading Jack Argleton and the
Treasure Chest. When I woke up, I recognized
Captain Argleton?s ship; it was a nightmare to
deal with. The underwater ship had secret
doors, secret passwords, and moved you
where you were to the other side of the ship
every hour or so. The only way to turn that off
was to shut it off in the Conference Room,
unfortunately Argleton and his crew were in
there. I remembered that there was another
ship underwater. I?d have to find something to
use to breathe there. But what? There was a
wooden sign that read Aquarespa Berries,
under it. It read in small letters: lasts for 1
hour. Well, aqua means water, and resp means
breathe, so those berries must be
underwater-breathing berries. I grabbed about
20 Aquarespa Beries, just in case, we were
really far away and couldn?t find another
Aquarespa Berries bush. I went to hide behind
a huge stack of boxes, but it wouldn?t help
because Michael Houston did that and he was
found and nearly drowned because he had to
jump off the ship to escape. So, I would just
have to knock out some pirate and----instead I
will get a set of pirate clothes from the supply
closet that Argleton left in there.
?Argleton may be the baddest pirate
but he is so stupid!?
I turned around and was so scared
that one of Argleton?s pirates would have
captured me, but it was a boy, who looked like
I?ve seen him before and was followed by a
girl who looked familiar to me. They both
looked and were dressed like Argleton?s
pirates. They shoved me in to the supply closet,
and told me get dressed with the pirate
uniform in there. They left and I came back
out.
I asked them who they were and
were they ready to fight Argleton?s pirates,
but they said they were sent here a couple of
days ago, too. I told them I was sent too. Both
had fallen asleep reading this book, and woke
up here the next day. The boy was named Zach
Hannis and the girl was named Ariana Miller.
Zach had found Ariana about an hour ago and
had tried to find the way to the Conference
Room. Luckily, Zach had read past where I had,
and knew where to go, turn, and knew almost
all of the passwords, but he wasn?t that sure

half the time, because we were moved about

every hour. Then, finally, we met up with with
Argleton.
?Griple, where is the gold necklace,
with the red gem??
Zach, who obviously was sure what
to do and say said:
?Hudson?s pirate crew stole it, we
have video footage from last night, that we
watched this morning, it was Donan who was
on guarding duty to protect the ship.
?Where?s Donan?!?!?
?He?s on the other ship, trying to see,
if he could find Hudson?s crew.?
?Tell him later that he better stay
awake at night and guard it or else? .? said
Argleton leaving, in a convincing or-else voice.
We decided to roam around looking.
Soon after, we came by the Conference Room,
and found a gold necklace, with a red jewel, in
the center. We picked it up, and stored it, just
in case. Right above the Conference Room,
there was a timer, which said how much more
time until we would be transported back
somewhere. We only had 46 minutes and 39
seconds. We had found a key on our way to the
Conference Room. We ran into a weird pirate,
with an eye-patch, he looked suspicious and in
a hurry.
?Ver, do you think you are going??
?Who are you?? we all said in unison.
?I am Victor Teninsula, I don?t think
ve ?ave met.?
We all introduced ourselves as Zach
as Andrew Vendivitz, I was Wes Sinte, and
Ariana as (like I did, had a hard time looking
and speaking like a guy) Bret Bonnant.
?Where are you going? What do you
have there?? asked Ariana.
?None of your beezness, now go find
Argleton to see if he needs anything.?
Teninsula answered.
After Teninsula left I said, ?Did you
see what that weird Russian Teninsula guy had,
he had a silver piece of jewelry, like that silver
charm bracelet that wasn?t stolen. Then, that
must mean we have to find that charm bracelet
first. And he seemed too nervous and in a
hurry, I bet he was anxious to get that before
anybody finds out.?
Ariana said, ?Argleton?s such a stupid
idiot, dropping his key to the Conference
Room and having a storage closet with the
uniforms.? As we walked down trying to look
unsuspicious.
?So we?ll return the silver charm
bracelet and the gold necklace with the red
gem, back to the jewelers?and Argleton,
Teninsula, and the rest of the crew will be in
jail.? I said.

Soon after we found Argleton when

we were warped back somewhere, we changed
out of our uniforms, and confronted Argleton
and Teninsula.
?Look Teninsula, we know you stole
the silver charm bracelet, and you were all
nervous about leaving when you saw us.
Argleton we know you stole the jewelry.
We?ve called the police," Ariana said
confronting Argleton and Teninsula.
?Look, I don?t know who you guys
are, but we stole the jewelry and we took the
risk," answered Argleton as he and Teninsula
got out a sword.
?That?s all we have to know----cops!?
yelled Zach.
In seconds three police officers
bolted in the room. The first a tall, thin, blonde
man, the second a shorter red haired woman,
and a thick tall black-haired man.
?You guys are in deep trouble,
stealing, threatening, and attempting to kill! I?d
say about a good 55 years in jail.,? said the
woman.
?Why so long?? I asked.
?Because these pirates have been
wanted in 7 countries, they?ve stolen so much
jewelry that Hudson?s crew stole from the
jewelers?, the jewelers?in this area suspected
that they stole a gold necklace with a red gem
in the center and a silver charm bracelet, we?ll
have to also track down Hudson?s crew,?
answered the tall thin man.
?Oh, now that I remember there is a
money reward of $50,000 each to given to the
finder(s) who tracked and found the pirates.?
exclaimed the thick tall man.
?I remembered that Teninsula
dropped the silver charm bracelet and we
found the gold necklace with the red gem in
the center,? Zach said just remembering.
?These criminals have stolen many
valuable items, the jewelry you kids just found
is worth over $300,000!? answered the tall
thin man.
?Well, thank you kids so much for
finding these criminals and for finding the
missing stolen jewelry, we appreciate it so
much!? said the woman.
All of a sudden, Zach, Ariana, and I
were transported back home. This was
possibly the greatest time I?ve ever had, with
Zach and Ariana. The next day, I saw what
looked like Zach Hannis and Ariana Miller, I
waved to them and they instantly recognized
me as Mae Kolinski. Over the next couple of
weeks we became the bestest of friends. But
that was only the beginning of our crazy
adventures.

EMO
BY: Two Killjoys
My name is Thom, pronounced as tum as in tummy. I
should tell you that I?m in love. Today is the Valentine?s
Day Dance. I don?t have a date, but I?m going anyway.
Maybe...she will be there. By she I mean, Nora Stonem.
Even though she barely knows me. It's a shame, too,
because I love her.
I?m walking to school right now and-oh my god. She?s right
there. Nora is crossing the street, whoa, she?s walking
towards me. Nora is now strolling next to me...what do I
do?
?Hi, Thom.? Nora said in her singsong voice.
?Uh...er...hi.....Nora...? I answered awkwardly. The rest of
our promenade was stuck in uncomfortable silence.
When we reached the school, we split in separate ways
to our lockers. I was blushing as I reached the classroom,
because I had never even spoken to her before.
Everyone in first period was getting lots of valentines
and I, well, I got none, as usual. That?s alright though,
because maybe I?ll see Nora again today. That thought
always brings a smile to my face, Nora.
Nora just happened to be in my fifth period class, which
was music. Today we were presenting projects about our
favorite bands. Mine is about My Chemical Romance, Fall
Out Boy, and Panic! At The Disco. Some people call them
the emo trinity, I just call them life.
I presented second to last, nobody seemed to like, or
even pay attention, to my presentation. Except Nora. Nora
presented last, and guess what? Her presentation was
about the exact same bands I wrote mine about. It?s got to
be destiny or fate or whatever.
At the end of class, Nora approached me with a grin upon
her beautiful face.
?I loved your project, Thom!? she said, over pronouncing
my name. ?Tuuumm?is how she said it, I loved it. I think
maybe I?ll pronounce it like that from now on. That was
the moment that I knew. I knew I had to ask her to the
dance. Oh...oh...she already left with some of her friends.
Ugh, he is in that group. By he, I mean, Kian. Kian is
everything that I?m not. Sporty, popular, handsome, and
now he?s trying to steal my girl.
The rest of the day I slowly planned how to ask her,
subtly and sweet. I went home after school and picked
out the swaggest outfit. I ended up choosing a neon
green suit. It makes me stand out, just a little. It matches

the dress I heard her talking about with her friends, I?m
not a stalker at all, I promise.
I walked to the dance full of excitement and hope and
some tacos (my mom made me eat before I left the
house). Apparently it?s 6:04, fashionably late. By four
minutes.
When I entered the building, close to no one was there. I
decided to get some snacks and punch while I waited for
her to arrive.
She arrived with Kian, that jerk. I requested them to play
My Chemical Romance while I asked her to dance, I didn?t
even care what song, as long as it was them.
Suddenly I?m Not Okay (I Promise) came on; I rushed
through the large crowd of boisterous teens. She looked
up as she heard the guitar come in. I walked up to her
slowly, breathing fast, my heart was racing and my hands
were clammy.
?Nora. Will you dance with me?? I
asked speaking very fast.
?Alright. You don?t mind, right,
Kian?? Nora questioned already
standing up. Kian growled. I
took her hand and led her to
the dance floor. Together we
sang every lyric and danced our
hearts out. It was magical. When
the
song ended a slow song came on, and
almost automatically, Kian jumped in before I could say
anything and Nora danced with him.

Then the worst part came, she kissed him. She made the
move. Not him, her.
I stormed out of the building with rage.
Nothing ever goes my way. Right as I started screaming, a
car pulled in front of me. The window rolled down slowly,
?Are you okay?? the voice asked.
?NO! I?M NOT OKAY!? I shouted at the vehicle.
But that?s when I realized, Gerard Way had asked me the
question and the car, which was actually a limo, was full
of the rest of the band. Ray, Frank, Mikey, and Bob all
smirked, thinking of their song. I started singing the lyrics
not knowing what else to do. They all joined in and
invited me into the car. We drove into the sunset
discussing plans to get the band back together.
