Reflection:
After looking at the pre-assessments I
need to meet with some students who
may need some extra instruction and
assistance. Before I move forward in
the unit I need to meet with struggling
students to check for understanding.
Overall I am very pleased with the
students pre-assessments. Students
loved seeing pictures of Bald Eagle.
They loved sharing with their buzz
buddy.

Tuesday

Reflection:
Started meeting with students that I
thought needed some extra help and it
went really well. The students enjoyed
the one on one time and they
responded really well. Students love
discussing the bald eagle and LOVED
the live streaming of the bald eagle. I
may display it throughout the week.
Some how I got off schedule today so I
had to rush a little bit. Tomorrow I need
to wear a watch.

1) Tap prior knowledge: Find out which symbols they already know-Preassessment
2) State learning goals
a. We are going to learn about some of our countrys symbols.
3) (Model) Instructional activities- Talk about symbols. What are they? Use a
stoplight as an example: red is a symbol for stop, etc...
a. A symbol is something that stands for something else.
4) Anticipatory Set: Watch You Tube: Symbols of the United States
(introduction to meaning and identification of symbols)
5) Introduce Bald Eagle

Talk about the bald eagle as Americas bird and how people
recognize the bald eagle as a symbol of America.
6) Use PowerPoint (GP) to go over places where its found and why it is a
symbol
7) Shared Writing/Guided practice: Bald Eagle is, has and can
a. Teacher and students will fill out anchor chart about the bald eagle.
8) Closure: have students share a fact with a partner using chart
a. Share with your buzz buddy one fact from the chart we just made

symbol we learned yesterday.
2. Briefly review Bald Eagle,
3. Model: teacher will write one fact on paper and display it on the document
cam.
4. Independent practice: Have students use Bald Eagle chart from yesterday
to write 3 facts about the Bald Eagle- students will write 3 facts about the
Bald Eagle and color a picture of it
a. While students are working on their Bald Eagle pictures show them
the live feed of the Bald Eagles nest.
5. Closure: Have students pick a partner and share one of the facts they wrote
on their sheet.
Teacher will meet with student who did not answer the Bald Eagle question on
pre-assessment to make sure she understands.

Reflection:
Students liked that the Statue of
Liberty is made of copper and
connected it with the coins unit they
are learning in math. They also liked
being able to fill out the anchor chart
with the marker.
When I met with students today each
one already understood and I did not
have to reteach.

Reflection:
Students loved the hook. They were
fascinated that it has 897 stairs. None
of them had ever been there. They
enjoyed the video. I ended up drawing
a Washington Monument on chart
paper and created a chart similar to a
bubble chart. They enjoyed telling me
the facts they knew and seeing their
facts on the paper.
I had to reteach the Monument with
two of the struggling students.
Tomorrow morning, I will have to meet
with them again to see if they retained
the information.

Introduce new symbol- The Washington Monument
Hook: Have students try to guess how many stairs theyd have to climb in order
to reach the stop of the Washington Monument (897).
Tap prior knowledge: Has anyone ever been there? Did you go inside?
View Power Point and discuss the monument
a. The monument is a symbol that honors our first president, George
Washington.
b.

The monument is made of marble and weighs as much as 15,000


African elephants.

c.

The building has the shape of a tall needle.

d.

There are 897 steps and an elevator inside the monument.

There are windows at the top for people to see all of Washington, D.C.

f.

On February 22, 1885 (George Washington s Birthday), a ceremony


was held to celebrate the completion of the monument.

Reflection:
This group of students loves to draw
and create things. I thought it would be
a good idea to have students choose
their favorite symbols and draw it and
write why its their favorite. This activity
took much longer than I expected. All
students were able to tell me each
symbol and a fact for each.

2. Show Brain Pop Jr.- National Symbols video to review
3. Make a class four square book with facts about each symbol. Model the first
square. Guided practice: Students will help teacher fill out the other

5. Closure: have students share their favorite symbols and read what they
wrote about it.

Reflection:
Most students got every question right
on the final assessment. It helped that
I reviewed before they took it. I think
its important to review especially in
first grade. They liked the word search
that they received after they were
finished with their tests.
