Lesson Objectives
Students will be able to:
1) Summarize the characters, plot, and setting of specific fairy tales
2) Identify common characteristics of fairy tales, such as once upon a time beginnings, royal characters, magical
characters/events, and happy endings
3) Demonstrate understanding of literary elements by asking and answering questions
4) Create their own fairy tale using the literary elements discussed in class

CC.1.2.2.C: Describe the connection between a series of events, concepts, or steps in a procedure within a text

Rubric/Scoring Criteria:
Students will be given participation points during this lesson. If the student is involved in readings, questions,
and individual work then he or she will receive a total of 15 points for participation. The story map will be
worth 5 points. Story Maker stories will be worth 10 points.

Materials and Resources:
1) Smart board and computer with Internet access
2) Online fairy tale (Little Red Riding Hood)

4) Tablets with Story Maker app pre-downloaded

Procedures and Content:


1) Introduction:
T: Tell class the plan to learn about fairy tales
S: Listen
2) Read-aloud
T: Choose students at random to read one paragraph at a time
S: Listen to story and read paragraph when chosen
T: Ask students questions afterwards about setting, characters, plot, conflict, and resolution
S: Answer questions by raising hand and being chosen
T: Ask if students have any other questions
S: Ask questions if needed
3) Story Map
T: Explain directions and ask if students have any questions
S: Listen, ask questions, and then complete task
4) Creating own fairy tale
T: Explain directions and story requirements to students
S: Complete assigned task and save the story on their tablet
T: Ask students if anyone would like to share their story
S: Students who volunteer may read their stories one by one and other students will listen
