This course introduces students to theories of human development across the lifespan using an ecological systems perspective. It examines how social systems like families, peer groups, organizations, and communities promote or inhibit human development and considers the impact of diversity. The course competencies focus on engaging with diversity, using research to inform practice and vice versa, and applying knowledge of human behavior within social systems to assessment, intervention, and evaluation processes.

COURSE DESCRIPTION The ecological systems perspective is presented. Students are introduced to knowledge and theories of human development across the life span. Human behavior is studied within the context of social systems in which people live, including families, peer groups, organizations and communities. Emphasis is placed upon how social systems promote and deter human development and the influence of diversity on human development COURSE COMPETENCIES AND PRACTICE BEHAVIORS 2.1.4 Engage diversity and difference in practice Practice Behaviors: Gain sufficient self-awareness to eliminate the influence of personal bias and values in working with diverse groups; recognize and communicate the importance of difference in shaping life experiences
