The Mimic
How many people are familiar with the film noir genre?
Now how many people have actually watched a film noir movie?
Inspired by things such as gunpoint, la noir, jazz, early 1930s swing and
countless references in movies to this genre Ive decided to create a radio
drama of the film noir genre. And I even stumbled on a radio play adaptation
of DOUBLE INDEMNITY.
The given the working title Fletcher in the mimic case and with each new
case is a new chapter in fletchers life that will be given a new subtitle.
The radio drama will be a series.
Ive chosen this because I believe it will benefit the story as we are following
Fletcher while hes trying to solve these cases.
We are trying to figure things out about the character while he is still trying
to come to grips his past.
We are following fletcher thought his present life.
But not everything seems to be so logical. And well learn more about that
as the series goes on.
The narrative structure is non-linear as we jump back to part of Fletchers life
like his time in WWII.
Flash backs will play a key role in this series as it will give the audience
further information about Fletcher. Another key narrative structure used in
film noir.
Im aiming to evoke intrigue in this new case where in a part of his life where
hes returned from war and tried to continue a normal life in the police force
as a detective.
Fletcher is in a country with culture and locations he doesnt know.
His past has come back to haunt him at the most inopportune time, I want
the audience both be aware and connect with parts of Fletchers life.
For this part of the series with Fletcher trying tackle the Mimic case I will
hope the audience are trying to figure out who it is along with Fletcher.
Radio 4 is where many and most radio plays are aired. My radio play will be
after the watershed due to the langue used and the themes of violence.
BBC iplayer also has radio plays on the website so it will also be there
available to watch.
If the budget where to be too much to air on the radio an alternative would
be to use youtube, soundcloud and other creative distribution sites.
The narrator of the radio play will be heavily involved giving information to
the audience which is a convention of film noir both in radio and film.

20,000 an hour is estimated average for an hour of radio play.

The studio is already owned by the college and can be rented free for
student.
I own the required recording equipment and editing software.
The sound effects and music used will be created by myself or downloaded
from royalty free websites.
Seeing as this project is being produced by students for students the rates at
which the actors will be paid varies completely and is completely negotiable.
It could be anywhere from 0 to 50

Character biography:
Narrator (older Fletcher):
P.I. Fletcher: Daemon Fletcher. D.O.B- 04/05/1924. Served time in WWII after
a rough two year service around the east
Commissioner Jonhstone: knew Fletcher in the war
Unimportant: Assistant commissioner Saul Mailmun P.C. Rothers Timothy
Kelly Lucy Fletcher(flashbacks only)
The Mimic: not much is known of the mimic. Nobody has ever seen his
face only heard whispers, seen shadows of this illusive master mind who
always seems to be

Storyline: In this episode P.I. Fletcher is told he is to be transferred by

request from Scotland Yard to assist them on a case due to a
recommendation from the commissioner. They have been running into
countless dead ends on what the press has named the Mimic case. This
episode opens with Daemon bringing the audience up to date on his transfer
and his boat trip. We are brought into the present with Daemon being
escorted by Saul Mailmun to the commissioners office as Fletcher (and the
audience) are given a brief overview on the events of the Mimic. Fletcher
and the commissioner catch up over a whiskey and discus the mater of the
Mimic. Fletcher is told that this illusive Mimic has been copying famous
crimes and murders. Most notably the recent case has been a twist on the
infamous Jack the Ripper. Its now late at night and Fletcher and the
commissioner are driving to the recent crime scene talking more about this
Mimic character. We learn that at every crime scene there has been a
trophy left plus every lead they have ends up useless. This man (or woman)
is a master: Disguise, planning or escapes. You name it this person is always
a mile ahead of the police. After they arrive and have swept the crime scene
they have a brief chat with some of the people at the site (P.C Rothers and
one of the eye witnesses). The commissioner wraps up the visit and drives
Fletcher to his hotel. The audience is left alone with Fletcher cogitating. He
knows very little about this case and already has a feeling of pessimistic
reluctance, something doesnt feel right and as he lays down with his drink
in hand we hear echoes of his past run around inside his head. Downing his
drink the voices recced and the detective is able to sleep. (Could go from
here with him being kidnapped?) Fletcher is awoken when he hears a loud
noise as it seems as if someone has ran out of his hotel room in a hurry. The
room door has been forced open and the lock on his brief case has been
busted and the contents ransacked. Theres an envelope placed on the desk

signed with Fletchers name. As its read aloud to the audience it contains
information on the case.

Blurb: When Scotland Yard requests L.As help on one of Englands most
dangerous and confusing cases private investigator Fletcher tries to grasp
the customs of his over the seas cousins. Fletcher must use all his previous
experience to solve the Mimic case all while battling his guilt soaked past.
