The Economics of Immigration
Immigration is a hot topic in todays society, with different sides to whether or not a
comprehensive immigration reform would be a good idea. With my argument, Id like to
research the different sides of the argument, as well as how it would be beneficial to the
economy. There are millions of undocumented people living in the United States, many of whom
pay taxes and hold undesirable jobs that others dont want. I think that a comprehensive
immigration reform would greatly help the economy, especially if they charge a price for the
forms needed to fill out. The Deferred Action Program requires a $465 processing fee; if they got
over a million people to pay to apply for residency, the government could potentially make a lot
of money.
The first article talks about how Obamas recent Executive Action would help stop the
tearing apart of families across the country, who get deported. Democrats are pushing for the
program to start so that those who are eligible can go ahead and apply for it. They agree with this
program as a temporary solution to the problem of immigration. This article says that harsh
border security needs to stop in how they treat people trying to cross into the border. This

position is that families should stop being torn apart, and an immigration reform is necessary, but
the Executive Action is necessary.
The second article gives more of a republican perspective, in that they say they would
like a comprehensive immigration reform, but they want it on their terms. They disagree with
amnesty because they say its like rewarding undocumented people for breaking the law.
However, many of them think that deportation is one of the best ways to go as well. Republicans
blocked Obamas Action by trying to take funding away from it as well. The position of this
article is that an Immigration Reform is more necessary than Obamas temporary solution to a
much larger problem.
I agree with the position that an Immigration Reform would be a more permanent
solution, as well as more border security, but one that does not dehumanize those crossing the
border. While it is not the countrys job to go into the Central American countries and check out
the problems with violence and their corrupt governments, it would be a good idea to try to help,
so that maybe families can find stability and feel safe in their own homes without trying to enter
a foreign border.
