PGoC Round 2

What does "global citizenship" mean given that the definition of

"citizen" is tied to a specific nation-state (which is why we use
expressions like dual-citizenship)? How might we resolve this
contradiction?

Can we argue for human rights while also valuing the rights of all living
things, including the planet?

So although, Bosniak says that Nussbaum was criticized for using the
term global citizen because its specifically tied to nation-states, legal
systems, immigration laws and all of the technical qualities of international
law, I disagree with the critics. In my opinion, it should not be taken literally
to mean the person who is tied directly with international governments
which as the article said doesnt even really exist. Just because I can go to
over 100 countries with an American citizenship and my cousin can barely
get a visa to the US with her Lebanese citizenship doesnt devalue our
interests to be more globally aware. Being a part of the US and Lebanon has
definitely shaped my outlook; however, before college, I was not the same
global citizen that I am now.
Essentially, those two backgrounds are influences but they do not
define my global citizenship. Way back in 101, when I was a sophomore who
did not know if I had really made the right decision to be a Global Studies
major over Political Science, I learned a really important distinction between
the two. Global does not always mean international. Global is the whole
picture while international is what happens between two or more countries.
In my IR classes, we talk about normative operations, hard law and soft law,
and essentially the mechanics of International politics. Global studies looks
at everyone and the themes that affect powerful countries and the
disappearing islands. We see beyond treaties and the effect of the cold war,
to exactly the heart of globalization and how we can try to actually make the
world a better place for each and every inhabitant.
The critics in the article are talking about international citizenship. Its
a concept completely different from global citizenship. To be an international
citizen is to focus on those technical terms. To be a global citizen means to
actually care about the globe and its inhabitants and to have a genuine
interest in the cultures themselves not just their policies. Its about care to
sustain our planet because the progressive state right now is scary. Yes, its
both human rights and the environment. Human rights are the basic
necessities of life. The world can handle its life and human life at the most

basic level. The detriment comes from our total abuse not the essential
needs we have had since the beginning of man. To be global actually means
to care about the globe, its inhabitants, and its preservation. If you can
identify with that, you are a global citizen.
