1. To start the class off the teacher will first review what was learned
yesterday by saying Yesterday we learned about firefighters, a town
mayor, a veterinarian, and a fisherman. We also heard a story about
various other jobs. Today we will watch a video that discusses other
jobs.. The teacher will then play the Brainpop Jr. video for the
students.
https://jr.brainpop.com/socialstudies/communities/communityhelpers/pr
eview.weml Following the Brainpop video is a short quiz that the
students will take on community helpers.
2. The teacher will then say Now we will go back to our groups from
yesterday and go through five centers to become more familiar with the
jobs in a community. This will have the students moving around,
engaging with other classmates, and taking part in various activities.
There will be five centers for the students to rotate through. The teacher
will be walking around interacting with the students and overseeing the
center rotations.

SocialStudiesLesson/UnitPlanTemplate(precursortoTeacherWorkSample(TWS)inInternshipII)

Center 1: The puzzle activity. The students will be matching the

worker to his/her place of business. The puzzle pieces contain
both a picture and the word that the picture represents
(beneficial for ELLs). ESE/ESOL Accommodations: The
students will be allowed to work with a partner or in groups.
The puzzle pieces also contain photos for the ESOL/ESE
student to link the term with the picture.
Center 2: IPad Apps. The students will be choosing from a
variety of games to practice learning about jobs throughout the
community. They can choose from the following: Community
Helpers-HD, Community Helpers By: Kid Mechanix,
Community Helpers By: Paper Boat Apps, Community
Helpers By: Tinytapps, Swapsies, and Community helpers
Play & Learn. The information about each of these apps is
available under the Applications tab on this weebly.
ESE/ESOL Accommodations: If the student does not know
how to work the technology, or does not understand how the
game works he/she can work with a partner.
Center 3: The students in this group will each be given 3
different verses in the What is my job? song along with the
lyrics to the rest of the song. The students will rotate clockwise
in a circle taking turns adding their verse into the song. Once a
new voice has been added and the song is complete the student
have to guess what the job is before singing the song again with
a new verse. In this center the students will also have the option
of listening to the cassette tape and playing the lotto game. In
this game the students will listen to various sounds and
descriptions from the street and from a restaurant. If the students
guess the correct object that is making this sound they receive a
token. The person with the most tokens at the end of the center
receives a sticker. ESE/ESOL Accommodations: Sounds
unlike words should be known across various cultures. The
sound of a hammer will be the same in the U.S. as it is in
Russia. If the student still experiences confusion he/she can
work with a partner
Center 4: In this center the student will have two games to
choose from, or can play both if time permits. The first game
has three community buildings with a cutout spot for cards to be
inserted. The students will take turns placing the correct picture
cards in the correct community buildings. When they are done
the answers are on the back for a self-check. The second game
involves the students building their own community. They will
have a map of some streets and some land on a game board.
They will than have to take the pieces from the bin to build their
own community. The various pieces include cars, trees,
buildings, schools, churches, etc. ESE/ESOL
Accommodations: The first activitys cards include pictures as
well as the words. Both of the activities are going to be done as
a group so if the student has difficulty reading a term a group
member can assist in reading/explain the term. The second

Resources/Materials

activity is hands on and would not require reading/writing.

Center 5: Graphic Organizers- the students will each choose a
community worker to write about. Once the student has decided
on a community worker they will complete a worksheet on who
their community worker is, what their job is, when they do the
job, where the job is, why they do this job, and how they do this
job. Once the students have completed this worksheet they will
pair up with a partner and complete a Venn diagram comparing
and contrasting their two community workers. The students may
use the first worksheet they completed as a reference. If enough
time remains the students may draw a picture of their
community worker. ESE/ESOL Accommodations: Drawing a
picture. Short phrases/simple words will also be accepted.

After the centers are over the students will be asked to go back to their desks.
Once seated the teacher will place the scale on the board for the class to see.
He/she will then ask the students to rate themselves by looking at the scale and
placing the page with the number that represents their understanding face up on
their desk. The teacher will utilize a 0-4 scale throughout the lesson to help
monitor student understanding and help them learn to self-assess
