Competency

Reflections

Competency #1-The principal knows how


to shape campus culture by facilitating
the development, articulation,
implementation, and stewardship of a
vision of learning that is shared and
supported by school community.
Competency number one was addressed
during the internship by gathering
information to learn more about the
community. The goals I need to set
include getting to know more about the
surrounding community in order to involve
the community to share in shaping,
developing, and implementing change.
Change takes time but as a great leader,
people will follow and understand and
believe in the vision because they
understand the stewardship of a vision of
learning that is shared and supported by a
school community.

Competency #2-The principal knows how


to communicate and collaborate with all
members of the school community,
respond to diverse interests and needs,
and mobilize resources to promote
student success.
Addressing this competency as a future
principal taught me how to communicate
and collaborate with all members of the
school community and how to respond to

Competency #3-The principal knows how


to act with integrity, fairness, and in an
ethical and legal manner.
What I learned about competency three
involved how to act with integrity, and
fairness. Because it is vital as a school
principal to set high standards and to
always present oneself as a leader that
has characteristics that represent ethics,
integrity, and fairness. I learned, as
always, everyone is watching, therefore,
all issues must be handled in an ethical
and legal manner. Goals to be set, would
include staying knowledgeable about new
laws and procedures. School materials
must be distributed fairly to all staff
members to give all students the
opportunity to academically succeed.

Competency #4 -The principal knows how


to facilitate the design and
implementation of curricula and strategic
plans that enhance teaching and learning;
ensure alignment of curriculum,
instruction, resources, and assessment;
and promote the use of varied
assessments to measure student
performance.
I learned meeting constantly with
departments are critical and helps to
provide opportunities to facilitate the
design and implementation of curricula.
Departments make strategic plans to
enhance teaching and student learning.
Principals would be the facilitator to
assist staff to analyze data to help to
measure student performance in order to
set goals to help all students to achieve
academic success.

Continued Competency #4 Goals I need to set to continue learning about this


competency includes ensuring the alignment of
the curriculum are being tested and taught on our
campus. I addressed this competency by using
strategies to help engage students in order to
learn curriculum.

Competency #5-The principal knows how


to advocate, nurture, and sustain an
instructional program and a campus
culture that are conducive to student
learning and staff professional growth.
What I learned about competency five
included the principal being an advocate
for all students. Also, many students do
not have biological family members,
therefore, I also learned as principal,
having a nurturing nature is a necessity.
The goals I need to set to continue

Continued-Competency #5
I addressed this competency by taking an
active role by truly trying to get to know my
students personal needs. For example,
instead of assuming why they are late every
day to school, I started to speak to them in
private to find out what was going on at their
home.

Competency #6 -The principal knows how


to implement a staff evaluation and
development system to improve the
performance of all staff members, select
and implement appropriate models for
supervision and staff development and
apply the legal requirements for
personnel management.
I learned, as principal, evaluation and
development system improves the
performance of all staff members.
Therefore, it is critical to monitor and to
give staff constant feedback to help them
to grow and to develop professionally.
The goals I need to set to continue
learning about competency six is to make
sure as principal is to select staff
development that will address staff
members needs. I addressed this
competency by participating in staff
developments, and making suggestions in
department meetings.

Competency #7-The principal knows how


to apply organizational, decision-making
and problem solving skills to ensure and
effective learning environment.
Competency seven helped me learned
that an effective learning environment
are the key essentials to helping to
engage students to help them understand
and learn content. I addressed this
competency by problem solving issues and
collaborating with staff members in
department meetings. Goals I need to set
to continue learning about this
competency include learning new
innovative ways to maintain an effective
learning environment.

Competency #8-The principal knows how


to apply principles of effective leadership
and management in relation to campus
budgeting, personnel, resource
utilization, financial management and
technology use.
Competency eight helped me to learn
principles to maintain a campus budget
are the key essentials to campus success.
I also learned technology in classrooms
are vital to help diverse learners learn.
And the principals knows how to utilize
resources to acquire personnel. Goals I
need to set to continue learning about
this competency include acquiring
resources to help to integrate technology
into all classrooms to support the 21st
century learners. I addressed this
competency by observing administrators
on how they effective lead staff and how
they managed the campus budget.

Competency #9-The principal knows how


to apply principles of leadership and
management to the campus physical plant
and support systems to ensure a safe and
effective learning environment.

Competency nine was actually addressed


by conducting safety procedures in my
classroom. I learned that practicing
safety procedures helps students
transition easily when a mock fire drill or
lock down may occur. More important,
when there are issues at the physical
plant the problem must be addressed
immediately. Leadership skills and
management skills are critical in
maintaining a safe and effective learning
environment. The goals I need to set to
continue learning about this competency
are to continue to prepare, plan, and
train staff in case an emergency occurs.
