Human Traits

Hitchhiker Thumb

Attached Ear Lobes

Chin Dimple (......and dimples)

Hair on Fingers

Hand Clasping, Left Thumb Over

Right

Check for
tiny hairs in
this area of
your fingers,
above the
knuckle.
Oddly, this trait has nothing to do
with being left or right handed.

Blue Eyes

Ear Points - also

called Darwin's Point

Tongue Rolling

Freckles

Freckles can fade with

age. People can also gain new
freckles after exposure to the
sun.

What happens when a gene from Mom

tells the cell to do one thing, and the
gene from Dad tells the cell to do
another?

Who was Gregor Mendel?

He was known as the FATHER OF
GENETICS

Many people thought offspring were

a blend of their parent's traits.

He discovered how traits were inherited

GENETICS the study

of heredity
HEREDITY the
passing on of traits
from parents to
offspring

Mendels Peas
Mendel studied pea plants
Pea plants have many traits
*tall vs. short
*purple vs. white flowers
trait-a characteristic

For example:
Tall Dad x Short Mom = Medium
Offspring

Mendel's Experiments
Mendel realized that inheritance is controlled by
genes.
The offspring receives one gene from Mom and one
gene from Dad for each trait.
gene - a section of a chromosome coding for a
specific trait

or feature

Alleles
There are alternate versions of genes.
The pea plants that Mendel used had
different colored flowers.
White Flowers or Purple Flowers
allele - a version of a gene passed on to an
offspring from a parent, represented
by a letter (Capital or Lower Case)

Law Of Segregation
When a parent makes sperm or eggs,
their chromosomes separate during meiosis.

Dominance
Some traits are dominant over others.
Purple flowers are dominant.

The offspring randomly receives one

allele from each parent.

White flowers are recessive.

dominant - the trait that is expressed
(capital letter- P)
recessive - the trait that is masked by a
dominant gene (lower case letter - p)

Law Of Independent Assortment

The inheritance of one trait (such as
plant height) does not influence the
inheritance of a different trait (such as
flower color).

More Genetic Vocabulary...

GENOTYPE - alleles for a trait expressed in
letters (ex: PP, Pp, pp)

PHENOTYPE - the way the trait appears, put

into words (ex: Purple Flower or White Flower)

HOMOZYGOUS (Purebred) the two genes

that determine a trait are the same (PP or pp)
HETEROZYGOUS (Hybrid) - the two genes
that determine a trait are different (Pp)

How will you remember those?

With your table partner, come up with a way to
remember the difference between
Genotype
and
Phenotype
Some ideas: rhymes, stories, pictures, word
associations

Check for understanding

More checking

1. A one-eyed purple people eater is crossed with a

two-eyed purple people eater. All of their offspring
have two eyes. Which trait is dominant?

3. The passing of traits from parents to offspring

is known as ___________________________
4. Who was the father of genetics? __________

2. If you use the letter P for this

gene. What is the genotype of
the offspring?

5. A single gene will code for a

_______________, such as flower color.
6. Every gene is made of two ______________

Punnett Square
a grid used to figure out possible
traits for the offspring

Black fur in guinea pigs is dominant and white fur is

recessive. What are the chances that two heterozygous black
fur guinea pigs will have a baby with white fur?

Check for understanding

1. A homozygous recessive one eyed purple people

eater (ee) is crossed with a homozygous dominant
two eyed purple people eater (EE). What is the
phenotype of the offspring?
Are these offspring the F1 or F2 generation?
2. If you crossed the offspring with each other, how
many of the new offspring would you expect to have
two eyes?

Ticket Out the Door

1. What is one thing you learned or were
reminded of today?
2. What are 2 questions you have about
how genes are passed from parents to
offspring?
