animals have adapted to survive while we read.
Statement of Objective or Purpose:
Today we will read the story Exploding Ants, and use graphic sources as a
way to further the understanding of the text.
Sequence of Activities:

Yesterday we talked about graphic sources. What is a graphic source?

[Picture, Diagram, Chart, Information Organizer]
Here are some ways that good readers use graphic sources:
1. Preview to help get an idea of what the text will be about.
2. As a source to compare information in the text with.
3. As a way to record information for your own understanding.
Yesterday we also talked about important ideas. Using your knowledge
of composing, tell me where you might find important ideas in this story.
Open to pages 82-83. Are there any graphic sources on this page?
Discuss.
Read pages 84-89, pausing to discuss the use of graphic sources,
vocabulary words, and important ideas.

Questions to ask:

How do animals adapt to survive?

Describe a strategy to use a graphic source while reading.
How could you use a graphic source to record information?

Conclusion and Summary:

Today we read a selection from Exploding Ants. We learned what many
animals do in order to adapt to survive.
Self Evaluation and Reflection:
This lesson went well, and seemed to flow easier. I think that is because it
was largely focused on the reading of the passage. I really enjoyed this text,
and the students seemed to be very interested in it as well. One thing I really
wished I could provide was a video of an exploding ant actually exploding.
