INTRO TO

INSTRUCTIONAL
TECHNOLOGY

INSTRUCTIONAL
TECHNOLOGY
Instructional Technology or Educational Technology is
known as is the effective use of technological tools in
learning. As a concept, it concerns an array of tools,
such as media, machines and networking hardware,
as well as considering theoretical perspectives for
their effective application.

INSTRUCTIONAL
TECHNOLOGY
In what ways do you currently use technology in your classrooms?

INSTRUCTIONAL
TECHNOLOGY

INSTRUCTIONAL
TECHNOLOGY
- Integrating technology into classroom instruction means more
than teaching basic computer skills and software programs in a
separate computer class.
- Effective tech integration must happen across the curriculum in
ways that research shows deepen and enhance the learning
process. In particular, it must support four key components of
learning: active engagement, participation in groups, frequent
interaction and feedback, and connection to real-world experts.
- Effective technology integration is achieved when the use of
technology is routine and transparent and when technology
supports curricular goals.

INSTRUCTIONAL
TECHNOLOGY
- Technology also changes the way teachers teach, offering
educators effective ways to reach different types of learners and
assess student understanding through multiple means.
- It also enhances the relationship between teacher and student.
- When technology is effectively integrated into subject areas,
teachers grow into roles of adviser, content expert, and coach.
Technology helps make teaching and learning more meaningful and
fun.

INSTRUCTIONAL
TECHNOLOGY
Today we will focus on three categories of technology that are
common in education.
- Web 2.0 (software)
- Hardware
- Assistive Technology

INSTRUCTIONAL
TECHNOLOGY
What is Web 2.0?
- Web 2.0 is the move toward a more social, collaborative,
interactive and responsive web.
- Web 2.0 marks a change in us as a society as well as the Internet
as a technology. In the early days of the web, we used it as a tool.
Today, we aren't just using the Internet as a tool -- we are becoming
a part of it.
- It is the process of putting us into the internet (But not in a Matrix
kind of way)
- It is people connecting with other people

tools. These tools are also
arranged by category.

INSTRUCTIONAL
TECHNOLOGY
Follow the Web 2.0 tools link from the previous slide.
Pick a program that you think would be most beneficial to your
students.
How would you use the tool in your classroom?
What support would you need?

INSTRUCTIONAL
TECHNOLOGY
Hardware devices
This category includes actual devices that teachers and students
use in the classroom.
Laptops
Ipads/ tablets
Interactive Whiteboards
Projectors
Interactive remotes

INSTRUCTIONAL
TECHNOLOGY
Can you think of any other devices that can be used in education?
How could you use this device?

INSTRUCTIONAL
TECHNOLOGY

INSTRUCTIONAL
TECHNOLOGY
Laptops are one of the most
commonly used technology
device in education. A laptop
can perform many different
functions. Laptops also provide
access to more diverse sources
of information that otherwise
would be unavailable.

INSTRUCTIONAL
TECHNOLOGY
The use of ipads and tablets are
becoming increasingly popular.
Ipads can perform many of the
same functions as laptops but
have the added ability of being
mobile. Ipads also have the
benefit of access many apps
that were created for the
classroom.

INSTRUCTIONAL
TECHNOLOGY
An Interactive White Board is a
large interactive display that
connects to a computer. A
projector projects the
computer's desktop onto the
board's surface where users
control the computer using a
pen, finger, stylus, or other
device. The board is typically
mounted to a wall or floor
stand.

INSTRUCTIONAL
TECHNOLOGY
Assistive technology (often abbreviated as AT) is any item, piece of equipment, software or
product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of
individuals with disabilities.
AT can be low tech like communication boards made of cardboard or fuzzy felt.
AT can be high tech such as special purpose computers.
AT can be hardware such as prosthetics, attachment devices (mounting systems), and positioning
devices.
AT can be computer hardware, like special switches, keyboards, and pointing devices.
AT can be computer software such as screen-readers or communication software.
AT can be inclusive or specialized learning materials and curriculum aids.
AT can be specialized curricular software.
AT can be much more, including electronic devices, wheel chairs, walkers, braces, educational
software, power lifts, pencil holders, eye-gaze, and head trackers.
Different disabilities require different assistive technologies

INSTRUCTIONAL
TECHNOLOGY

INSTRUCTIONAL
TECHNOLOGY
It is important for teachers to become familiar with different types
of assistive technology devices. Teachers have the privilege of
teaching students from different backgrounds and ability levels. It is
the responsibility of the teacher to become familiar with the
devices students use so they may better meet their
accommodations. Follow the link below to see the different types of
assistive technology devices.

INSTRUCTIONAL
TECHNOLOGY
- With a partner, discuss how you could have integrated technology
in a lesson you previously taught.
- Pick a Web 2.0 tool and a device to integrate.
- How would you accommodate students that may require assistive
technology needs?

INSTRUCTIONAL
TECHNOLOGY
Advances in hardware and software have the potential to bring
about fundamental changes in how technology is integrated and
even in education itself. Computers formerly tethered to desktops
by cables are being rapidly replaced by wireless laptop and
palmtop models that free students to move about the school;
collect, share, and graph data on field trips; and communicate their
whereabouts and progress to teachers and parents
