Effie
Mr Munro

Dr John Watson
Effies daughter

EffieShe is the main character of the story. She lived in Atlanta (USA) . She was married to John
Hebron who was a lawyer. She had to cut herself of from her race because her husband was a
coloured man and at that time, people didnt like mixed marriages. When her husband died,
she returned to England but she didnt bring her daughter with her. She left her child in
America with a trusted servant because the girl was not very healthy. When she arrived in
England, she met Mr Munro by chance and learned to love him .She was afraid to tell her
husband about the child because she thought she might lose him. She tried to keep her
secret for three years but finally she had to see the girl. So she brought the child and the
servant to England and hid them in a cottage nearby. She asked her husband for a quantity
of money and that is what makes him suspicious.
Effies daughterShe was born in Atlanta .She took after her father so she was black. She stayed in America
with a servant while she recovered from her illness. She came to England and was hidden in
a cottage. She wore a yellow mask so as not to be seen and therefore avoid gossip.
