Evaluation of Findings:
For this analysis, I decided to research the demographics of the Franklin County school
district community, centralized in the small rural town of Brookville, Indiana. I found most all of
my basic demographic information on a search engine devoted strictly to organizing population
data by city names in the U.S. The Results from the U.S. Census Bureaus website indicated that
well over two-thirds of Brookvilles population is White, non-Hispanic (sitting at an elevated
statistic of 97% of the total population.) Sadly, Asian, Black, Hispanic, American Indian, and
other multi-racial groups combined together do not even equal out to be a full five percent of the
towns population, which indicates further that Brookville (and most all of Franklin County) is
not a very racially diverse community.
The racial demographics of Brookville Elementary perfectly coincide with the notion that
Brookville itself, exists as a very limited community in terms of racial diversity. The Indiana
Department of Education poll above representative of the racial diversity present in Brookville
Elementary states that an estimated 98% of students in the elementary school are white. As of the
2012-2013 school year, there were 514 students enrolled during the time in which this selection
of data was compiled. Unfortunately, from the data collected this means that only about 10
students in attendance at Brookville Elementary are either Hispanic or Multiracial. The findings
indicating other specified races such as Black, Asian, or American Indian were not represented
within the schools population whatsoever. However, by comparing the results from Great
Schools that detailed the student population as having a 1% Hispanic and 1% Multiracial
minority, the ISTEP scores from the Indiana Department of Education did not display any
records from these minority students, possibly because there were so few non-White students in
attendance that there was not even a populous to sample from.
Unfortunately, because the population of non-White students was so miniscule, I was not
able to collect any data from the Indiana Department of Education to display the performance
similarities/discrepancies between White/Non-White students. However, what I really am
concerned about is the fact that as of 2012, there appeared to be no accounted-for ISTEP scores
for those few minority students that were in attendance. Findings such as this make me
concerned that possibly the minority students may have decided to relocate schools or just did
not take the ISTEP whatsoever, possibly due to a lack of accommodations for them if they were
not fluent speakers/readers of English.
