Learning Objectives:
Guiding Questions:
What are strategies that I can use to solve each type of word problem?
How do I determine which strategy would help me the most in solving
the problem?
How do I write an equation that shows what is happening in the word
problem?
Materials:

Headphones
Computers
Lesson:
Introduction: (5 minutes)
The teacher will start off with one word problem written on the board:
o Example for addition: Jacob has two blocks. His sister Sarah gave
him one more block. How many blocks does Jacob have now?
The teacher will then ask the students how many blocks does Jacob
start off with? (two)
Then the teacher will ask the students to draw out two blocks on a
sheet of paper using a pencil and crayons.
The teacher will then ask the students how many blocks does Sarah
give Jacob? (one)
The student will then be asked to draw one block on the sheet of paper.
The teacher will ask the students how many total blocks does Jacob
have now? Count the blocks you have drawn. (three)
(30 minutes)
The students will then go to the computers to do word problems
on their own.
Once they complete the word problems, they will be asked to
raise their hand to have their papers collected by the teacher.
The students will then watch a video to get a better
understanding of how addition with actual numbers works (using
the plus sign and equal sign).
They will then do an online activity involving seashells to find the
answer to simple equations.
Subtraction: (Tuesday, April 21)
The teacher will start off with one word problem written on the board:
o Example for subtraction: Hannah had 5 cookies. She gave 2
cookies away. How many cookies does Hannah have left?
The teacher will then ask the students how many cookies does
Hannah start off with? (five)
Then the teacher will ask the students to draw out five blocks on a
sheet of paper using a pencil and crayons.
The teacher will then ask the students how many cookies does
Hannah give away? (two)
The student will then be asked to cross out two of the blocks they have
already drawn.
The teacher will ask the students how many cookies does Hannah
have now? Count the cookies that you have not crossed out. (three)
(30 minutes)
The students will then go to the computers to do word problems
on their own.
Once they complete the word problems, they will be asked to
raise their hand to have their papers collected by the teacher.
The students will then watch a video to get a better
understanding of how subtraction with actual numbers works
(using the minus sign and equal sign).
They will then do an online activity involving fireflies to find the
answer to simple equations.
