Extended Inquiry Project Reflection
This reflection is as important as any other component of this project, probably more important
in some ways. Please provide thoughtful responses. I will read every word of it.
1. Your idea.
Using your proposal as your starting point, your essay as your end, how did your idea about your
subject change from beginning to end? What changed it? Why did it change? Detail your
progression through the development of your idea.
2. Your research.
In your research, you were required to provide a variety of sources in your works cited: books,
articles, web sources, video, etc. Describe the process of your search. If certain sources resulted
in no useful evidence, why do you think so? If certain sources provided a lot, why do you think
so?
3. The effect of your research on your direction.
What surprised you in your research? Did you find a lot of information about a certain area of
your study that you didnt expect? Did you find too little? Did your findings encourage you to
narrow your search or broaden your search or change the initial direction entirely?
4. The writing of your essay.
What did you find challenging about writing the essay? How did you deal with putting yourself
into your research, perhaps using I for the first time? How did you feel when your essay was
complete? What was the most rewarding aspect of writing the essay?
5. Your life as a researcher.
How has this inquiry project been different from /similar to other research projects you have
undertaken? What have you done for the first time?
6. Your life as a learner.
What did you learnabout anythingthat you didnt already know?

When I started this extended inquiry project my inquiry question was why police brutality
become such a common issue has and my purpose was to answer question like; what can
communities do to prevent any more police shootings, does police brutality have to do with race
and racism, what does this mean for future police officers, why arent officers who are involved
in police brutality incidents being indicted, why is it so hard to convict them, where is the
evidence or does it lack and what happens when people begin to retaliate? My thesis was be how
is belief in a unprejudiced world is killing humanity. As my research began more questions
unfolded and the questions that I asked previously now had answers. My inquiry question
changed to what happened to serving and protecting the community. It changed because I
realized that police brutality is not something new but the rise in police brutality is a problem.
The reason I choose the second question instead of the first question was because I wanted to
know how to did police stray away from the core values of their career and what it would take to
rear back to those values. The progression was amazing I started with one topic and one question
and then on the questions kept coming. I was amazed at the information I had found and well my
research was developing. The research process for me was interesting. I remember Professor
Dagher telling us to choose a topic that would keep our interest or else the extended inquiry
project would seem or hard or wed just be bored. We were supposed to choose sources that were
current, but what I did go back ten years and look at the statistics from then to now. The
information I found was somewhat baffling but also interesting. In doing my research I found an
article about the community trusting the police to do their jobs and I remember this quote if
society does not trust the system they wont use it. This made so much sense to me, its just like
having friends of being in a relationship if you cant trust your partner there is just certain things
you wont rely on them to do. Just like if society feels like the justice system is built to screw

them they wont use it, instead they will take matters into their own hands. I believe certain
sources lead me to nothing because I was looking for something more particular. I believe that
some sources provided a lot for me because that source answered more than one of the many
question I was curious about. What surprised me is that the media is a lot more bias than I
thought. In an article I was reading about police brutality it seemed as though the police
departments went to any and every extent to protect their own. I enjoyed learning about the
police culture and police brutality and I found it interesting how loyal they are to one another
whether one is wring or right. I knew I had to narrow my search down to just a few key points,
but everything I was reading was so intriguing and it was like I wanted more every time. So I
stuck to just a few topics like; media coverage, community trust in police and what could be the
cause of police brutality. I love tying my research paper because it was about my findings based
on a topic that I chose. I could use the word I, I was able to talk about my beliefs about police
brutality and I was able to ask the questions that I wanted to know. This definitely wasnt a
typical research paper and I appreciated that. It was bittersweet when it was complete. I was
happy that I was finished but I know that something has to be done to stop police brutality. I
learned a lot about myself from researching this topic. I learned that just because police brutality
exist doesnt mean that all police are bad. I am almost certain that some people took on their role
in the judicial system to try and fix the issues that we have been facing and issues that may arise
in the near future. I just feel like police brutality is wrong. Police are supposed to be the ones
protecting us but instead they are killing us off one by one with no remorse or consequences. I
still feel the same way. I asked the question before how many more times does a black man have
to lose his life before someone does something about it. Not just black men, white men as well
women. I learned that police brutality happens among all races. I learned that minorities are

targeted because of the stereotypes about them. I learned that society is silent about an issues that
it fatal to all.
