Project Start Date: February

Title of Project: Im An Organ Donor, Are You?

18, 2015

Project Completion Date: April

1. In 40 words or more describe your project and the steps you performed to
complete it. What did you produce or perform?
I produced a set of seminars in the health classes at First Colonial High School. I
also produced a small Organ Donation Drive with a cornhole tournament. For the
classes, I had to pick dates, prepare a presentation, choose and plan activities, and
create a lesson plan. For the donor drive, I had to find a venue, gather supplies and
prizes, plan a cornhole tournament, and gather the cornhole boards/bags.
2. In at least 40 words explain how the project challenged you, and what sort of
time challenges and resource problems did you encounter?
My classes went fairly smooth with the planning and the actual execution, the only
problem I encountered was in the classroom with some students being
disrespectful. My donor drive challenged me on many levels because I had troubles
with my consultant being present during the early stages of my project. She had
undergone knee surgery and the earliest I was able to contact her was in midMarch. By that time I had started to re-plan a project without her, and then she
showed back up and I had to start planning my original idea. There was a lot of
back and forth happening with my donor drive, so that stressed me out a lot. And
then when I finally had my donor drive ready to go, I couldnt find a venue for about
3 weeks, and I was denied by eleven places.
3. List and then describe 5-8 fundamental ideas/concepts/skills of your project,
which you learned during your project.
Idea/Concept/Skill

Explanation

(how you learned it)

Creating a Lesson Plan

In order to be able to conduct my classes, it was required

to make a lesson plan.

Finding and communi-

I had to find a venue to hold my donor drive, and

communicate with
them on the schedule and what I needed.

cating with a venue

Organize a tournament

I had to organize and plan out how the cornhole

tournament would be played and make sure that every
one of the contestants understood the rules.

Publicize

I had to publicize my donor drive and make an effort to try

and make people excited about coming.

Working with a consultantI had to work with someone I did not know so I had to
work around

whom I did not know

prior to my project

her busy schedule and mine, so it was hard to meet up

sometimes.
Also, she had surgery when the project phase first started,
so she was not present for my classes and she was out of
town for my donor drive.

4. List and describe 5-8 problems you encountered in your project, and briefly
describe how you solved each.
Problem

Explanation

Consultant absenteeism Consultant was not present for my donor drive or my

donation classes, so I planned them by myself and
presented them by myself.
Finding a venue

It took me about three weeks to find a venue and I was

denied by eleven places, but I eventually found a venue
which was the Ocean Park Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Disrespectful students

Some students in both of my classes were disrespectful

during my presentation, so I catered to those who were
actually interested and engaged with me on the topic.

Planning my event

Due to consultant absenteeism, I had to change my plan

to a different event and then my consultant finally
reached out to me, so I had to go back to my original plan
of a donor drive.

Coordinating with the

This problem didnt present itself until I found a venue,

but sometimes
it was very hard to get a hold of John Burkard on the
phone so that we could speak about my event. It was
understandable though because he was saving others
lives.

Attack

Forced to change class date due to excessive mental

stress and hospital
stays which delayed work being finished

My mother - helped me through my grandmas heart

attack and when I was reconsidering my project idea, she
helped me come up with new ideas. She also took some
photos during my donation drive

Mrs. Callahan [health teacher] She let me use her health class time and students
to hold my seminars. She also eliminated the distraction
of disrespectful students by calling security and had them
escorted out.
Mrs. V

She helped not to completely lose my mind when I did not

hear back from my consultant or when I could not find a
venue

8. How does your completed project compare to the picture you had in mind
when you started the project?
Honestly my vision of my project in my head was so much better. I had my
Donation Drive so late in the year that no one really showed up and that
disappointed me greatly because I worked so hard to put everything together and
find a venue that it was really sad when only 15 people showed up. The classes
also went better in my head because I didnt image that anyone could be so
disrespectful to me that they would have to be escorted out by security. I was
teaching about a lifesaving practice and I didnt really understand why no one cared
except for me and a few other students.
9. If given the opportunity, what would you do differently now that you speak
from experience?
I would have just planned and completed my donor drive on my own time instead of
my consultants. I feel as though if I wouldve done that, the drive would have been
ready earlier in the year so that more people would have showed up. I also
wouldve taught LSA classes because I think they would have been more respectful

because they will be doing the same thing in a few years, so they would want to
know how the project works. They also understand how important senior project is
to every senior.
10.Now that the project is completed, explain/describe the stretch or challenge
you encountered/experienced.
I had to find a venue by myself which was one of the most discouraging experiences
of my life. I was denied by eleven places in total and it took me about three weeks
to secure a venue. Finding a venue that would support organ donation was an
extreme challenge.
11.Beyond the project itself, what did you learn about yourself?
I learned that when other people dont support what you believe in, it eats away at
you. All the places that said I could not have my drive there chipped away at me. I
didnt understand why so many people didnt support a lifesaving practice. Had it
been a drive for cancer or a child with an illness, everyone would have be all for it,
but if someone doesnt initially care about your topic, you cant convince them to
start.
12.What grade would you give yourself on the project? Justify the evaluation of
your grade in at least 25 words.
Grade: 86 B
Justification: I dont want to say I deserve a hundred because I honestly dont
think I deserve it. Yes, I encountered hardships, and yes they were overwhelming,
but so did everyone else. Looking at my final product I am proud that I
accomplished what I did, but I dont know if I would deem it a success. In my
classes, I couldnt make everyone follow along and I couldnt convince everyone
that organ donation was a great thing. Also my donor drive didnt have many
participants. Even though I planned and executed two projects, I did not raise the
most money, I did not have the most participants, and I dont think I raised the most
awareness either. I am proud of what I did, but it was not as successful as I thought
it would be, or it couldve been.
