Reflection:
I.
How did you choose what qualities to include in your rubric?
The first quality on the rubric is a very big overlying feature. I must completely understand what
differentiating instruction means in order to get better at it. I have already started making my Weebly
website and have made files on the website about IECE462, IECE464, and Practicum. We learn so
much in these classes and at practicum and I knew right away that I would want to include these into
my portfolio. We have learned a lot in math about differentiated instruction, but my portfolio will be an
even better teaching tool if I include ideas from other subjects. In IECE460, we spent an entire day on
differentiating content, process, and product based off interest and readiness. I had a very hard time
keeping up on this day of class and rewriting this information into my portfolio is helping me
understand it so much more! As an inclusive early childhood educator, it is important to understand
what the specific disabilities recognized by the VDOE entail and what various strategies a teacher can
use to help those student learn the best they can.
II.

Why are these qualities important based off what we have studied together about effective
mathematics instruction?
We have studies A LOT about what makes math instruction effective and math is only understood
when it is taught in the childs zone of proximal development. Grouping is important in mathematics
because children all learn at different rates. Once I complete this portfolio, I will be much more able to
group children based off their readiness or interest. Almost everything Kateri and Almarode teach us is
backed up with evidence and I want to take this information and organize it into a portfolio website.

III.

Why are these qualities important based on what you have learned throughout the semester about
your goal topic?
I chose these qualities in my rubric because they are very important for someone to understand if they
want to understand how to differentiate. I was clueless about differentiating at the beginning of the
semester and now have an idea of how to get started! Thanks to this portfolio website, I will also have
a tool to help me if I need a review or get stuck. I have learned throughout this semester that my goal

topic isnt something you master over night. It will take a lot of experience to get good at
differentiating instruction, but this class has shown me that I HAVE improved in my understanding of DI
and know the first steps to take in order to effectively differentiate in my future classroom.
IV.
V.

Where do you think your portfolio is now based on your rubric?

What next steps will you take to move your portfolio to a higher level of quality before the end of the
semester?
My portfolio is about 1/3 of the way there. So far, my portfolio contains the definition of differentiated
instruction and I hope to display confidence in the understanding of it throughout my entire website.
After picking my goal, I have become more aware of when differentiated instruction is taught in my
other classes. I have been putting post-it notes in my IECE462 and IECE464 on worksheets that
contain an idea about DI. When I go to practicum and see DI, I jot down in my notebook what is
happening. I have to scan a few documents given to us by Kateri that cover how you can differentiate
content or process or product by readiness or interest. I am thinking about making a more colorful
chart that contains pictures so that the terms make more sense to me. I need to add to my website the
definitions of the words, accommodation and modification and provide examples. I will also upload
the document Kateri gave us about specific disabilities and the document handed to us about
strategies. I will alter the strategies document so it makes more sense to me.
