Whenwindblowspastaturbine,thebladescapturetheenergyandrotate.Thisrotationtriggersan
internalshaft,whichisconnectedtoagearbox,tospin,increasingthespeedoftherotation.This
gearboxisconnectedtoageneratorthatultimatelyproduceselectricity.
Fromtheoutside,horizontalaxiswindturbinesconsistofthreebigparts:thetower,theblades,anda
boxbehindtheblades,calledanacelle.Thenacellehousestheturbinesshaft,gearbox,generator,and
controlsandwheremostoftheactionhappensor,technically,wheremotionisturnedintoelectricity.

Inthemosttypicaldesign,thebladesoftheturbineareattachedtoanaxlethatrunsintoa
gearbox.Thegearbox,ortransmission,increasesthespeedoftherotation,from50rpmupto
1,800rpm.Thisfasterspinningshaftspinsinsidethegenerator,producingACelectricity.
Electricitymustbeproducedatjusttherightfrequencyandvoltagetobecompatiblewitha
utilitygrid.Awindturbineisequippedwithwindassessmentequipmentandwillautomatically
rotatetofacethewind,andangleorpitchitsbladestooptimizeenergycapture.Dependingon
thelocation,smallorlargewindturbinescanbeusedtoprovideelectricity.Smallwindturbines
canrangefrom250wattturbinesdesignedforchargingupbatteriesonasailboat,upto
50kilowattturbinesthatpowerdairyfarmsandremotevillages.Largewindturbinescanrange
from250kilowattturbinesusedbyutilitiestoprovidepowertoagrid,uptotheenormous3.5to
