Topic: Technology and Human Behavior
Inquiry: How does technology affect relationships between people in
modern society?
Thesis: Social media alters the behavior of adolescents and can
potentially change interpersonal relationships
Brooks, Stoney. Computers in Human Behaivor. Department of
Computer Information Systems, Middle Tennessee State University,
2015.
This article is useful because it contains up to date information,
as the study was made available to the net in January of this
year. It discusses how using social media can affect ones
behavior. There are obvious negative effects that can arise from
using social media, but little research has been conducted to find
these effects. According to this study, overusing social media can
decrease performance on any task. I can relate to the results of
this study based on personal experience. I agree that an urge to
pick up a smartphone to look at social media is disruptive to a
productive environment. From a psychological aspect, previous
research has established three personality traits that are central
to social media use: extraversion, neuroticism, and openness to
experience. I enjoy how many facts and exact percentages are
used in this article, as these pieces of information will come in

media.
Ong, Eileen Y.L., Ang, Rebecca. Narcissism, extraversion and
adolescents self-presentation on Facebook. Division of Psychology,
School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nanyang Technological
University, 2010.
In order to be considered an avid user of social media, one must
have solid self-presentation skills. This study focuses on
adolescents in grades 7 to 9 (ages 13-16), and analyzes their
facebook pages. The idea is to measure the level of narcissism in
the self-presentation of these adolescents online by looking at
profile picture rating, status update frequency, and various other
things. This article uses tables and mathematical figures to back
up the statements made. I like how they clearly defined the
terms that they used frequently in the article. Narcissism is
characterized by a highly inflated, positive but unrealistic selfconcept, a lack of interest in forming strong interpersonal
relationships, and an engagement in self-regulatory strategies to
affirm the positive self-views. The authors break down the facts
objectively while showing how social media is negatively
affecting adolescents.

Choi, Mina; Panek, Elliot; Toma, Catalina. When social media isnt
social: Friends responsiveness to narcissists on Facebook. Elsevier,
2015.
Unlike the previous sources, this article discusses how
narcissistic behavior on social media affects friends and
followers. Facebook is becoming less relevant for this generation
of users, but is definitely still worth mentioning when discussing
social media. The showing off on Facebook isnt always
welcomed. This article studies the responses (on Facebook,
comments and likes) of others that observe the pages of
narcissistic users. It includes tables that show the results of the
study, which points out that over confident users are less likely
to receive likes and comments under their pictures and status
updates. The conclusion of the study states that narcissistic
behavior negatively affects the interpersonal connectivity of
users on Facebook.

Ellison, Nicole B.; Boyd, Danah M. The Oxford Handbook of Internet

Studies Chapter 8: Sociality thought social network sites. 2013
This is a book that covers a myriad of topics regarding the use of
the Internet. Chapter 8 in particular discusses the proliferation of
SNSs (social networking sites). The chapter also does something
that is frequently overlooked; it points out what it takes for a site

to be considered a SNS. A social network site is a networked
communication platform in which participants have uniquely
defined profiles that consist of user-supplied content, content
provided by other users, and/or system level data A definition
so specific and thorough will help with researching social media.
It also weighs the differences between sites and how social
media changes at the same rate that people do. Peoples
practices, expectations, and social norms have co-evolved
alongside the technical features and social interaction
opportunities. This book, specifically this chapter, gives the
reader a full understanding of social networking sites.

Seo, Hyunjin; Houston, Brian. Teens Social Media Use and Collective
Action. New Media & Society, 2014.
This article tries to predict how teens will use their accounts on
social media sites. A need to belong, and collective self esteem
will dictate the behavior of teens on various SMSs. I agree with
the claims of the study based on my own experience with
multiple social media sites. According to the article, there is a
positive correlation between teens need to belong and time
spent on social media sites. The research is through; they control
groups such as gender, race, and socio-economic status. 80% of

people surveyed said that they participated in social networking
sites. This article focuses on participants use of social media and
likeliness to participate in a flash mob, which is a public event
where people participate together. The study shows that social
media increases users likelihood of participating in group
activities.
