Dynamic Word Play Activity

Students will learn the distinction between changing dynamics and what
each dynamic sounds like.
Third-Fifth
Teacher will create a small poem made up of 8 stanzas for students to
label with their dynamic selections.
Students have been introduced to dynamics and tone color adjectives- this
activity is used to reinforce those concepts that have already been learned.
Convey meaning through the presentation of musical work.
Perceive and analyze musical work.
1. Display teacher created poem on white board or overhead
projector.
2. Explain that students are going to use dynamics to help the poem
come to life.
3. Split students into small groups and/or partners.
4. Allow students to make their own dynamic patterns for each
stanza and/or word in the poem.
(pianissimo, forte, mezzo forte, mezzo piano, etc.)
5. Provide students with an example from the first stanza, and
perform in within the whole group setting to set a foundation to
work on.
6. Teacher will split groups: one-group drums only; one-group
rhythm sticks only, one-group with two students only to
differentiate the group sounds.
7. The teacher will allow each group to perform their masterpiece.
8. At the completion of each group, whole group will use tone color
adjectives to describe each performance.
9. Teacher will then review the concepts of each dynamic- ask
questions for comprehension from each student for full
understanding.
